Let’s Not Pretend Haj Amin al-Husseini Didn’t Support The Holocaust
by

The Left is having a field day at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s suggestion that Hitler didn’t want to exterminate Europe’s Jews until Haj Amin al-Husseini, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, suggested it.

In a speech before the 37th Zionist Congress in Jerusalem, Netanyahu said, “Hitler didn’t want to exterminate the Jews at the time, he wanted to expel the Jews. And Haj Amin al-Husseini went to Hitler and said, “If you expel them, they’ll all come here.” “So what should I do with them?” he asked. He said, “Burn them.”

Netanyahu’s remarks drew not only significant criticism from opposition politicians in Israel, but also from The Left in this country as demonstrated by this snarky little ditty in Mother Jones written by Inae Oh with the headline, “Germany Just Had to Remind Benjamin Netanyahu Who Was Responsible for the Holocaust”.

While there is literature that suggests Husseini played a far bigger role in the Holocaust, I think it is a subject which needs to be more explored far more exhaustively before someone like Netanyahu declares it to be fact. In any event, I don’t think Hitler needed any encouragement where it concerned killing Jews.

But let us not pretend that Husseini wasn’t an ally of Hitler and didn’t support The Holocaust. It wasn’t everybody who got a private sitdown with the Fuhrer as Husseini did in November 1941. Husseini sought an alliance with Hitler with the purpose of ending British dominion in the Middle East. He aided Hitler by broadcasting pro-Axis propaganda to the Arab world and recruiting Muslims into the German military.

Let us also remember that admiration for Hitler and Holocaust denial has long been rampant in the Palestinian territories. It shouldn’t surprise anyone that Mein Kempf enjoys the sort of popularity in the Palestinian territories that it doesn’t in most places.

Haj Amin al-Husseini probably wasn’t an architect of the Holocaust, but he is certainly an architect of the anti-Semitic hatred and propaganda which fuels Palestinians to this very day. The Left can criticize Netanyahu all it wants. But they are fooling themselves if they honestly believe the Palestinians aren’t driven by the same kind of anti-Semitic hatred which overwhelmed Europe prior to and during WWII.
