The murder of 16-year old Palestinian Muhammad Hussein Abu Khdeir is prompting speculation that he was killed by Jewish settlers in retaliation for the three Israeli teenagers whose bodies were found on Monday after being held in captivity by Hamas for three weeks. Witnesses claim Khdeir was outside a mosque in East Jerusalem and that he was forcibly abducted by occupants in a van. Such speculation prompts Washington Post foreign affairs writer Adam Taylor to argue that this might prompt a "third Intifada".
If it does turn out that Jewish settlers were responsible for Khdeir's murder then they should be prosecuted and punished to fullest extent of the law.
But when it comes to Palestinians accusing Israelis of vile acts things aren't always what they seem. Remember when Israel was condemned worldwide for massacring Palestinians in Jenin back in 2002? But as it turned out, most of the 56 Palestinians killed were armed combatants. Interesting how no one remembers the 23 Israeli soldiers were also killed during that confrontation.
So please forgive my skepticism. But until more definitive information is brought to light I am not going to accuse Israelis of committing this heinous deed.
I also find it interesting that the death of a 16-year old Palestinian is the top headline in the world while the death of a 16-year Jew named Daniel Viflic in April 2011 at the hands of Hamas who fired an anti-tank missile at the school bus he was riding in the Negev could barely move the world to yawn.
