In a minor political earthquake in Colorado, the powerful and popular sheriff of El Paso County, Terry Maketa, has been accused of having sexual affairs with at least three subordinates, promoting them, spending public money to travel with them, and other misdeeds.
Apart from the sheriff's malfeasance (assuming it's true), an equally important question is raised by statements from many people in Colorado Springs that many people knew about Maketa's behavior but said nothing due to fear of retaliation or due to wanting Maketa's political support. These questions may end up causing as much of a controversy as Maketa himself will.
