Eugenics Makes a Comeback

Shrouded in the garb of “reproductive freedom” and “equality," President Obama is launching a new eugenics initiative through a program designed to reduce pregnancies and births among teenage black and Hispanic women.

As reported by the Daily Caller, the Centers for Disease Control described the purpose of the program:

to demonstrate the effectiveness of innovative, multicomponent, communitywide initiatives in reducing rates of teen pregnancy and births in communities with the highest rates, with a focus on reaching African American and Latino/Hispanic youth aged 15–19 years.

No doubt America’s teen pregnancy rate is too high, but the wording of this mission statement is clear: stop the pregnancies, but also stop the births. This isn’t a campaign for stronger families or abstinence, but rather for contraceptives and ultimately abortions intended to reduce the black and Hispanic populations.

As you guessed, taxpayers will foot the initiative’s $110 million bill. The program’s national partners explicitly suggest abortions for girls carrying unwanted babies.

“Young women need the right to safe and legal abortion,” the government-funded group writes, rather than forcing a woman to “carry a pregnancy she didn’t want to term.” It says one of its goals is ending “the stigma and shame women are made to feel about abortion."

But this program is inherently flawed: It seeks to abolish the results, but not the source of the issue.

Of course high rates of teen pregnancy have dangerous social consequences, but the solution shouldn’t be abortion. The goal of this program isn’t to encourage abstinence and healthy relationships; it’s to tell young girls: “Have sex because you deserve it. But if you get pregnant, you deserve an abortion to erase the nasty consequences.” Also, if you are black or Hispanic, you should do it right away.

As the Caller notes, in New York City, more black babies were aborted last year than were kept. Should this trend continue, minorities will be killing themselves off one abortion at a time. This is self-induced eugenics.

What these girls really deserve is someone to tell them they don’t have to be sex objects, someone to encourage them to respect their bodies and look for a partner who wants to support them. They need someone to tell them that the diversity of the black and Hispanic population is important.

Obama might be able to demand a government-subsidized procedure, but no executive order can cause the government to show compassion.
