Needs a Night Light

I'm not sure how I got on Emily's email List. But Emily provides some light entertainment for me now that  football is over and baseball is weeks away. She also helps me understand the progressive woman as a going concern. This week a gal named Kate Black, who describes herself as Emily's research director, swooned that the Republican candidate seeking the 13th Congressional District seat in the U.S. House from Florida (St. Petersburg) "isn't just scary, he's terrifying."

Whoa, Katie. Take some deep breaths and think cool thoughts. If this doesn't help, breathe into a paper bag. (I hesitate to say "man-up" for obvious reasons.)

So what has our Katie so much atremble? After all, candidate Dave Jolly is hardly a movement conservative. He's a standard center-right guy who makes the right noises about entitlement reform, but if he has plans to end our calamitous over-promising and unaffordable future, he has kept them to himself. He says he is pro-life, but has announced no plans to end or even slow abortions. He won't even say the minimum wage is a bad idea and a job killer. He wants to make this another entitlement by indexing it to inflation. Jolly is clearly to the right of his Democratic opponent, Alex Sink, and most conservatives in Florida CD13 will have no trouble supporting him over this off-the-rack liberal. But he's hardly a right-wing red-hot. There is nothing about him to "terrify" even the faintest of progressive hearts.

Perhaps Katie just has a particularly delicate nature. If any TAS reader has Katie on his/her gift list, please send her a night light so she can get some sleep.
