In ‘Da (Gay) Club with Obamacare

For my money, nothing better represents the Obama administration's miscalculation (and overreach) on health care than a "DC Health Link assister" attempting to educate patrons of a gay bar on the tenets (and perks) of socialized medicine.

From Politico:

Washington’s new health insurance exchange dispatched a sign-up envoy to one of the city’s gay clubs one recent night to get out the word about Obamacare. It envisioned men mingling on the dance floor, a cocktail in one hand and enrollment information in the other.

But the brochures about DC Health Link, as the exchange is called, weren’t snapped up as quickly as the free condoms provided by a local clinic.

Like other health exchanges and coverage advocacy groups across the country, DC Health Link is reaching out to people wherever they may be, including bars. President Barack Obama even urged bartenders — who may themselves be uninsured — to hold happy hours to talk about health insurance and what it can offer young adults.

How can the same folks who helped elect Barack Obama twice, orchestrating two of the best-run political campaigns in human history, be so horribly tone-deaf and ham-fisted in their approach to selling Obamacare? Or am I missing something?

That strategy has clear challenges, however. In a packed nightclub like Town Danceboutique in Northwest D.C., music smothers conversation, dimmed lights make reading difficult, and health coverage is not what’s on people’s minds.

“They’re looking to let loose. They’re not looking to talk about serious topics,” patron Maven Saleh said as he surveyed the Town crowd on a winter weekend.

Trust me, Maven – there would be nothing anyone should take seriously about Obamacare if it weren’t already the convoluted law of the land.

Now, part of me respects the all-out effort the progressive left is willing to put forward on behalf of their pet laws. They understand the need for a systematic approach to changing the culture, economy, etc. It’s a reminder for conservatives of just how committed the other side is to their agenda (and not just in an existential sense).

While I respect the effort, I shudder (and chuckle) at the tactics. As far as the average liberal is concerned, there seems to be no corner of public or private life that is beyond the reach of government re-education (and indoctrination). We know about the public schools system. We know about media bias. We know what Robert Redford wants you to believe after watching some flaming piece of garbage like Lions For Lambs.

But now a couple of fellas can’t even head down to the local gay bar for some dosey doe-ing on the dance floor with “naughty Santa” without being harassed by government agents insisting they read up on Affordable Care Act literature. What gives? Have you no shame, DC Health Link?

All I know is this: As far as American progressives are concerned, we are engaged in total cultural warfare. How many of us on the right are willing to do something about it? How many conservatives even realize it?
