Tim Lincecum Tosses No-Hitter

By on 7.14.13 | 1:26AM

San Francisco Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum threw a no-hitter against the San Diego Padres tonight. The two time NL Cy Young Award winner struck out 13 batters while walking four. It was his first complete game and shutout since 2011. The Giants won the game 9-0.

The Freak's no-hitter is the second of the 2013 season and comes 11 days after Cincinnati Reds hurler Homer Bailey no-hit the Giants. The losing pitcher in that game was Lincecum.

Despite two Cy Youngs and two World Series rings, Lincecum has struggled over the past year and a half. In 2012, Lincecum went 10-15 with a 5.18 ERA with the World Champion Giants. He was only effective when Giants manager Bruce Bochy placed him into the bullpen during the post-season. Coming into his start tonight, Lincecum was 4-9 with a 4.61 ERA. Lincecum had lost seven of his previous eight decisions with his last win coming on June 4th against the Toronto Blue Jays.

I got to see Bailey's no-hitter from start to finish. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for Lincecum's triumph. However, I did see the last two innings on the MLB Network. Alexei Amarista nearly broke it up in the eighth, but Hunter Pence made a diving catch in right field to preserve the no-hitter.

There has been discussion about putting Lincecum into the bullpen. But if this didn't convince Bochy to keep The Freak in the starting rotation then nothing will.

What delights me most about Lincecum's no-hitter is that this will delight my sister to no end. Timmy, as she likes to call him, is her favorite player.
