Extra, Extra Innings

Extra innings were the order of the day over the weekend in MLB.

I just finished watching the St. Louis Cardinals and the Cincinnati Reds play 10 innings on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball. The Cards scored seven runs in the top of the 10th for an 11-4 triumph over the Reds.

On Saturday, the Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays played 18 innings with the Jays prevailing 4-3 on a walk off single by Rajai Davis. Incredibly, the Miami Marlins and New York Mets played 20 innings with the Marlins winning 2-1 on a single by Adeiny Hechavarria. Poor Shawn Marcum. He pitched eight innings and struck out seven batters but took the loss and is now 0-7 on the season.

On Sunday, the Marlins and Mets played "only" 10 innings with the Marlins scoring four in the top of the 10th to win 8-4. The Marlins own MLB's worst record at 18-44. But they are 8-3 against the Mets thus nearly accounting for half their wins this season. This can only make the arms in the Mets bullpen that much more tired.

It could be decades before we an 18 inning game and a 20 inning game on the same day. Or it could happen tomorrow. It is one of many reasons why I love this game.
