GOP upstart Gabriel Gomez trails Congressman Ed Markey by single digits in two separate polls conducted after the Massachusetts Republican and Democratic primaries.
Public Policy Polling (PPP) gives Markey a four point lead over Gomez (44-40) while the Emerson College Polling Society gives Markey a six point lead (42-36).
Both polls give Gomez large leads amongst independent voters. In the PPP poll, Gomez had a 47-31 lead over Markey amongst independents while the Emerson poll gave Gomez a 21 point lead (46-25).
The election is more than seven weeks away and much can happen. But the fact that so many people are open to supporting Gomez has to be alarming to the Markey campaign.
Gomez has challenged Markey to three debates. If future polls show the momentum for Gomez then Markey will have no choice but to accept Gomez's challenge.
Markey will do everything in his power to try to make Gomez unacceptable to Bay State voters. That will be tough given that Gomez has never run for office before. It would be unwise for Markey to go after Gomez's military record. Unless Gomez commits a gaffe, the only card Markey has to play would be to go after Gomez's record as a private equity investor. I'm sure if Gomez committed an impropriety on the job, we would have already heard about it. So Markey will most likely pull an Elizabeth Warren and campaign on a class warfare angle.
