MSNBC host Touré founded a student newspaper dedicated to black liberation theology while he was a college student attending Emory University from 1989 to 1992.
Touré’s flagship publication, The Fire This Time, lavished praise on famous anti-Semites, black supremacists, and conspiracy theorists whom Touré helped bring to campus. Before he became an intense-but-sardonic TV personality, Touré also decried “the suffocating white community” and defended a nationally famous fake hate crime.
Their reporting is excellent and well worth your time. This is nothing new for MSNBC, which also airs a weekend show hosted by Melissa Harris-Perry. The Tulane professor (in addition to having eerily collectivist views on schoolchildren) helped lead the racial crusade against the Duke lacrosse team. The team was accused of rape by an African-American woman, and immediately presumed guilty by several talking heads, including Harris-Perry. After the women's lacrosse players came out in support of their male brethren, Harris-Perry (then Harris-Lacewell) said, "Given the entire history of white men sexually assaulting black women, we always know that white women have been on the side of white men." Turns out those white women were entirely correct: The lacrosse team was cleared of all charges. Their accuser was later charged with child abuse, injury to public property, and resisting a public officer, and is currently being tried for stabbing her boyfriend to death. Thanks to hysterics like Harris-Perry, the lacrosse team was publicly humiliated for 15 months. Now she's comfortably ensconced on cable news.
And of course, MSNBC's six o'clock block is hosted by the Reverend Al Sharpton, whose laundry list of offenses includes roles in the Tawana Brawley hoax, the Crown Heights Riot which left one dead, and the torching of Freddie's Fashion Mart which killed seven.
For companion reading, check out Michael Moynihan's excellent piece on how ex-Weathermen and Black Panthers now have cozy teaching positions at major universities. It seems you can support the most noisome and extreme positions, and the most wrongheaded and slanderous causes, and come out unsinged. You just have to be a liberal idealist.
