Sandy Strands Family

By on 10.30.12 | 4:52PM

All things considered, I was unscathed by Sandy. I missed a day's work and got to go to lunch with my roomie at Doyle's.

O.K., my upstairs neighbor woke me up at 4 a.m. (as she often does) and I couldn't get back to sleep. But aside from that and having to walk around some broken tree limbs on my street en route to the T (which was reopened this morning), Sandy had little direct impact on me.

The same cannot be said for my Dad and my older brother Ezra who are amongst the millions of travellers who now find themselves stranded. Dad was scheduled to fly from New York to Thunder Bay on Halloween while my brother was supposed to fly back to Toronto from Chicago on Sunday. Needless to say, they aren't going anywhere for awhile.

But sometimes even misfortune isn't without its benefits. Dad was supposed to be out of the apartment  he's staying at on the Upper West Side because someone else was supposed to be moving in on the first of the month. But that person is stuck in Israel so my Dad can stay where he is for now.

It is amazing how one storm can upend the lives of millions of people all over the globe. Well, it's Nature's way of reminding us that we're not running the show.
