Dutch actress Sylvia Kristel passed away yesterday after a long battle with cancer. She was 60.
Kristel was best known for starring in the 1974 French erotic film Emmanuelle which attracted global audiences. She also starred in a number of Emmanuelle sequels. In later years, she reprised the role in a series of French TV films. By this time, her role was non-sexual and was limited to a series of vignettes on a plane with a diplomat played by George Lazenby, the one-time James Bond.
Alcoholism, drug addiction, failed marriages and financial ruin left Kristel in a state of lament by the time she co-wrote her autobiography. In a 2007 interview with The Telegraph, Kristel quipped, "You're much better off as a love goddess to die around the age of 40. You save yourself a lot of trouble."
