Josh Beckett Tees Off Red Sox Nation

By on 5.10.12 | 11:07PM

Last Saturday, Josh Beckett missed his scheduled start against the Baltimore Orioles due to a strained lat. Former Colorado Rockies pitcher Aaron Cook was called up from Pawtucket to fill in, got spiked and went straight to the DL.

Then came word that Beckett had found time to go out and play golf a couple of days before he had been due to pitch. Beer and chicken wings last September was bad enough but needless to say Red Sox Nation is teed off with Beckett. The Fenway faithful let Beckett have it as he was shelled for seven runs in two and a third innings pitched en route to an 8-3 loss to the Cleveland Indians.

I'm watching the post-game press conference with Beckett. He was asked about the golf outing on several occasions and was not in the mood to talk about it. All Beckett would say, "It's my off-day and I'll spend it how I want." He was, however, brutally honest in his assessment of his performance. "I pitched like s#*t," said Beckett.

This afternoon I was asked by a colleague if I thought if the Red Sox would deal Beckett. I must admit the thought crossed my mind. Beckett turns 32 next Tuesday and should still have some stuff left in the tank. But what team would want a pitcher with a questionable attitude and work ethic?

As of this writing, the Red Sox are 12-19 and are seven and a half games back of the Orioles and the Rays in the AL East. They are 1-8 so far in the month of May. My prediction that the Red Sox will finish in the cellar is slowly and painfully coming to fruition.
