What Perry Must Do To Romney

By on 9.22.11 | 5:31PM

Texas Governor Rick Perry has to come out swinging against Mitt Romney and put him on the defensive in tonight's Fox News/Google GOP Debate in Orlando.

With this in mind, I expect that Perry will bring up a report on Romneycare recently released by the Beacon Hill Institute, a libertarian think think based here in Boston. The report concluded that Romneycare cost Massachusetts 18,000 jobs.

Romney will, of course, counter that health care premiums were higher before the implementation of Romneycare. He's been saying that for some time now. Perry could then point out that health care premiums in Massachusetts continue not only to be the highest in the nation but that it is growing at a faster rate than anywhere else in the U.S. Romney will counter by blaming current Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, the Democratic controlled legislature and "the connector board" (a.k.a. The Commonwealth Health Insurance Connector Authority). Perry can counter by saying, "I guess the buck doesn't stop with you. Well, this wouldn't have happened if you hadn't set this chain of events into motion."

If Perry plays this right he could land some jabs on Romney and mess up his hair. Until now, nobody has landed any serious punches on Romney.
