Mariners Win a Ballgame

By on 7.27.11 | 10:16PM

For the first time in over three weeks the Seattle Mariners won a baseball game with a 9-2 thrashing of the New York Yankees this afternoon in the Bronx.

Prior to today, the Mariners had lost 17 consecutive games, a franchise record. On July 5th, the Mariners were 43-43 and only two and a half games back of the Texas Rangers and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the AL West. The M's are now 44-60 and 15 games back of the Rangers. They have dug a very big hole they probably cannot climb out of this season.

When the Mariners were in Boston last weekend things got so bad that M's manager Eric Wedge shaved off his horseshoe mustache.

Well, it could have been worse. The 1899 Cleveland Spiders (who had a 24-game losing streak en route to a won loss record of 20-134) were so bad they stopped playing home games.
