When Was Assad Ever Legitimate?

By on 7.12.11 | 10:56AM

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has declared that Syrian President Bashar Assad has "lost legitimacy." Earlier today, John Tabin called her remarks "a welcome first step" but adds there are "a lot more steps to take" for the Obama Administration with regard to Syria.

Of course, when Hillary says Assad has "lost legitimacy" it suggests that he was legitimate in the first place. Funny but I don't recall Assad being popularly elected in a multi-party election.

President Bush didn't consider Assad to be legitimate when he recalled Ambassador Margaret Scobey following the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in February 2005.

Recalling current Ambassador Robert Ford is the very minimum the Obama Administration could do under the circumstances.
