Betty Ford, R.I.P.

By on 7.11.11 | 11:07AM

While I was in Buck Harbor's Market in Brooksville, Maine on Saturday afternoon, I saw the cover of The Boston Globe and learned that former First Lady Betty Ford had died of natural causes the day before at the age of 93.

Of course, her greatest legacy came once her time at the White House was behind her. After coming to grips with her alcoholism in the late 1970's, Ford co-founded The Betty Ford Clinic (later renamed The Betty Ford Center) in 1982 to help people with alcohol and drug problems. Although it is best known for its celebrity clientele one of course need not be famous to receive treatment.

Betty Ford certainly did her part to make the world in which she lived a better place.
