Republicans Go to War Over Libya

By on 6.3.11 | 11:35AM

House Speaker John Boehner has introduced a resolution on the Libya war in order to beat back a rival bipartisan resolution that would force a withdrawal. Boehner's proposal demands answers from President Obama about 21 different items pertaining to the mission and forbids the deployment of U.S. ground troops. The Boehner resolution states that the president "has failed to provide Congress with a compelling rationale based upon United States national security interests for current United States military activities regarding Libya."

But Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) has a resolution invoking the War Powers Act and requiring the president to withdraw troops within 15 days. A third Ohioan, Rep. Michael Turner (R-OH), has introduced a measure expressing Congress' disapproval of the Libya intervention. Turner told the Hill he had 63 co-sponsors. Republicans aren't speaking with one voice on Libya at this time.

UPDATE: Boehner's resolution has passed the House.

UPDATE II: Kucinich's resolution failed.
