Trump, Romney: Twin Brothers of Flip Flops

By on 4.22.11 | 10:29AM

In a recent interview, Donald Trump gave a crass reason why voters should go for him rather than Mitt Romney — “the Donald” has “a much, much bigger net worth" than the mogul from Massachusetts. Hardly a reason to vote for a candidate, but we’ll concede the point to Trump on this one. In reality, though, there are far more similarities than differences between these two hopefuls when it comes to substantial political issues. Their reversals on abortion are one.

Romney was pro-choice until he began laying the foundation for a presidential run, and realized, as Rudy Giuliani rudely discovered in 2008, that adherence to the sanctity of human life is an indispensable position in Republican primaries. That’s an awakening Trump is now experiencing — encouraged, no doubt, by advice from political consultants.

To that end, Trump suddenly has discovered that he was wrong about abortion all those years. Of course, running for president (maybe) has nothing to do with that. It’s a conviction thing. Right.

The abortion U-turn is good evidence that Trump is getting nowhere close to the Republican nomination for president. If Romney suffered as he did in part due to his reversal on pro-life, then Trump will fare far worse. At least Romney developed a short track record in office of respect for life, namely on stem cell research. In contrast, Trump offers nothing but empty talking points.

(By the way, for an education on just how family friendly Trump is, check out this bizarre video short, during which the Donald “takes advantage” of Rudy in drag. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. And yes, I won’t be eating for days, thank you very much.)
