Budget Deal Likely This Week — Or Is It?

By on 4.3.11 | 7:57PM

Hitting the Sunday talk show circuit this morning, a few senators from both parties were predicting a budget deal this week to avoid a government shutdown this coming Friday. The fact that the two loudest voices belonged to Harry Reid, the Senate majority leader who suggested there was a deal last Thursday only to be contradicted by House Speaker John Boenher, and Lindsey Graham, the South Carolina Republican who doesn't exactly have his finger on the pulse of the caucus, causes me to take such predictions with a grain of salt.

Of course, even if a deal can be struck the upcoming vote on the debt ceiling and the 2012 budget proposal being introduced by House Budget Committee Paul Ryan are even bigger issues. (I have a column on this for the main site.) The spending fight is still very much in an early stage.
