Over the weekend, there have been several headlines suggesting that a budget impasse will lead to a replay of the 1995-96 government shutdown:
Despite the fear-mongering headlines, House Republicans -- including Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan -- have repeatedly disavowed any intention of a shutdown. So who's talking it up?
So it is Schumer and his fellow Democrats (including Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois) who are helping gin up all this "shutdown" talk. With the help of their media allies, Schumer and friends are projecting this onto House Republicans.
The House has already passed their own funding bill for the rest of the fiscal year -- after Nancy Pelosi and Democrats failed last year to pass a fiscal 2011 budget -- and it is now up to the Senate, where Schumer and the Democrats still have a majority. Their attempt to make House Republicans the bad guys is just so much gamesmanship.
Mark Hemingway of the Weekly Standard notes that Democrats certainly didn't hesitate to shut down the government in Wisconsin. It's important to keep in mind that it is Democrats, not Republicans, who are threatening a shutdown of the federal government now.
