Obama: Medicare Grew, and So Can ObamaCare

By on 12.9.10 | 9:03AM

One comment that President Obama made during his news confence that hasn't been getting much attention came after Obama was defending his health care law to liberals for making progress despite the need for compromise. He said:

(B)ecause it’s a big, diverse country and people have a lot of complicated positions, it means that in order to get stuff done, we’re going to compromise.  This is why FDR, when he started Social Security, it only affected widows and orphans.  You did not qualify.  And yet now it is something that really helps a lot of people.  When Medicare was started, it was a small program. It grew.

Yet that was the precise argument that critics of ObamaCare were making throughout the health care debate. That it didn't only matter what was in this specific piece of legislation, but the path that it put us down. Inevitably, ObamaCare will expand over time, and just like the other major enititlentment programs, cost signifcantly more than originally proposed and threaten our nation's fiscal sustainability.
