One day after Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell formally endorsed Trey Grayson, Sen. Jim DeMint threw his support behind Rand Paul for U.S. Senate in Kentucky. Both endorsements were sort of a formality -- it has been an open secret that McConnell was for Grayson and DeMint was for Paul -- but this makes it official.
DeMint had previously declined to rattle the Senate minority leader by getting involved in the Kentucky race, but McConnell's public endorsement seems to have moved him. He told Marc Thiessen this week that would be keeping watch to make sure that things didn't get unfair. DeMint's most recent endorsee made a surprise second-place showing in the Indiana primary last night. Paul is the frontrunner in the public polls.
