Why Did the Red Sox Trade Jose Iglesias?
by

OK, I am truly baffled. The Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox and Detroit Tigers just completed a three way deal. The Chisox send pitcher Jake Peavy to Boston, the Red Sox send shortstop Jose Iglesias to the Tigers while the Chisox get outfielder Avisail Garcia from the Tigers and three minor leaguers from the Red Sox.

I hate this trade!!!

Why did the Red Sox include Iglesias in this deal. I thought Iglesias was going to be the starting shortstop next year. After all, Stephen Drew is a stop gap solution. Having Iglesias and Dustin Pedroia up the middle could have made for the best double play combination in baseball since Whitaker and Trammell.

Iglesias was mostly playing third because of the struggles of Will Middlebrooks who was sent down to Pawtucket to get his act together. Third base was a new position for Iglesias, but he played it like he was the second coming of Brooks Robinson and Mike Schmidt. A

Aside from his glove, why on earth would the Sox part with a 23-year old hitting .330 for an injury prone 32-year old starting pitcher?

It’s not inconceivable that the Red Sox and Tigers could face off in the post-season. Why give the Tigers the missing piece that could win them the World Series? I guess Ben Cherington is no match for Dave Dombrowski.

Well, I guess this means the Sox will be bringing Middlebrooks back up from Pawtucket to play third.

I predict this will go down as amongst the worst moves the Red Sox have ever made up to and including trading Jeff Bagwell to the Astros for Larry Andersen, trading Sparky Lyle to the Yankees for Danny Cater and, of course, Harry Frazee selling Babe Ruth to the Yankees to finance the production of No, No, Nanette.

I say this because I believe Iglesias will hit .400. You heard it here first.
