C. Everett Koop, R.I.P.

Dr. C. Everett Koop, who served as Surgeon General under both President Reagan and the first President Bush, passed away today at the age of 96.

Before his appointment as Surgeon General, Koop was the chief of surgery at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Koop was known for his pro-life activism and wrote the book The Right to Live, The Right to Die on the subject of abortion, infanticide and euthanasia and subsequently made a series of films on the subject titled Whatever Happened to the Human Race.

During his tenure as Surgeon General, Koop was an effective communicator best known for raising awareness on the dangers of smoking and AIDS.

Not since Abraham Lincoln has anyone worn a Dutch beard with such distinction.
