Our libertarian friend Deroy Murdock
lowers a serious boom on Chuck Hagel today at NRO. In addition
to concisely cataloguing lots of better-known Hagelian slams on
Israel and/or Jews, Murdock shows that Hagel even snubbed Jews in
his own home state while a senator:
“During his last year in office, we knew he was not going to run
again, he never returned any of our calls,” Jewish activist Gary
Javitch told the Algemeiner website
on December 21. “I have always gotten callbacks, even as a
turn-down.”
“He was not the most responsive politician in Nebraska to me
personally at the Jewish Press and to the Jewish
community as a whole,” said Carol Katzman, the former editor of
the Omaha Jewish Press. Nebraska’s representatives
otherwise “were all very responsive,” she said. “It didn’t really
matter what their party affiliation was, if we were soliciting them
for an interview or a greeting ad for Rosh Hashanah or Passover.”
However, “Hagel’s office never even
responded. . . . We would make repeated calls”
that went unanswered, she added. “It was pretty obvious that he and
his staff were dismissive.” Katzman concluded: “Hagel was the only
one we have had in Nebraska who basically showed the Jewish
community that he didn’t give a damn about the Jewish community or
any of our concerns.”
Are Hagel’s words anti-Semitic? Call your senators at
202-224-3121 and tell them what you think.
As Murdock is anything but a neocon, this shows, again, that the
objections to Hagel are anything but limited to one subset of the
conservative movement.
C Bowen | 2.22.13 @ 9:50AM
I don't know if Murdock is an ideological neocon or not, but he did write ridiculous columns about the threat Iraq (didn't pose), fed from Doug Feith's Office of Special Plans no doubt, and even after the fact, was still maintaining the tinfoil hat conspiracy theory that Saddam worked closely with Al-Qaeda on 9/11, and the Iraq really did have WMDs.
He should be investigated by the House Un-American Activities Committee.
Quin Hillyer| 2.22.13 @ 9:57AM
No, he never said Saddam worked with Al Qaeda on 9/11. He DID say, accurately, that Saddam harbored terrorists, including Al Qaeda ones. And he noted, accurately, that Saddam DID have WMDs, albeit in low amounts.
C Bowen | 2.22.13 @ 10:48AM
Sure, he hedged the reports the Feith operations were sending him (illegally) but it's pretty clear what he was up to with his 2003 column, the 9/11 Connection.
http://www.nationalreview.com/.....oy-murdock
Tinfoil hat stuff.
C Bowen | 2.22.13 @ 11:05AM
Dec 2003 column:
How did Saddam help 9/11 happen?
http://old.nationalreview.com/.....150842.asp
June NR 2004 column:
Increasing evidence suggests Saddam ties to 9/11.
After that column, he starts to retreat from his conspiracy theory to just vague speculation of a relationship between Saddam and Al-Qaeda.
He then starts on the Iraq really had WMDs legalism like Rick Santorum--by which he meant 15 year old artillery shells with various chemical agents which the Pentagon called degraded.
It' s clear he has never apologized for telling lies that were fed to him, illegally, from Doug Feith's office, but since that make him an accessory to a crime, I wouldn't expect that of him.
Mike W| 2.22.13 @ 2:42PM
You mean the WMDSs that the USA essentially provided him, with the technology. The USA giving him that technology because he was gassing Iranians at the time, as well as Kurds.
Or perhaps we can discuss the mythical Iraqi WMDs that were somehow smuggled to Syria. Never mind that no credible administration source believed that or stated that. In fact, Bush admitted that no WDMs had been found.
The bitter clinger dead enders never give up.
C Bowen | 2.22.13 @ 4:35PM
The funding came through the BCCI bank in Atlanta, in league with the Import/Export Bank. Back in the day, AmSpec had an article, 'Whatever Happened to Iraqgate?' that was down the memory hole.
Hiller's claime is that he (Murdock) never said Saddam worked with Al Qaeda on 9/11; I posted titles to three columns that prove Hiller wrong.
So Hiller ran away.
Deroy Murdock| 2.23.13 @ 4:56AM
To C Bowen:
Stop lying. I never wrote articles based on information from Doug Feith's office -- illegally, legally, or otherwise.
Like it or not, Saddam Hussein DID ply Islamic terrorists with cash, diplomatic passports, safe haven, training, and other services.
In Smith v. Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, Clinton-appointed federal judge Harold Baer ruled in May 2003 that "Iraq provided material support to bin Laden and al Qaeda" in relation to 9/11.
As for Iraq’s WMDs, America found cyanide salt, biological-weapons ingredients, and mortar shells full of mustard gas and sarin nerve gas. The Energy Department reported that the U.S. discovered 1.77 metric tons of low-enriched uranium from Iraq “that could potentially be used in a radiological dispersal device or diverted to support a nuclear weapons program.”
So, Iraq really did have WMDs.
You can call them degraded, antiquated, not cutting edge, or whatever you like. Regardless, America DID find WMDs in Iraq, despite the Left's lies to the contrary.
Finally, agree or disagree with my old friend's work. But get his name right. It's Quin Hillyer, not Hiller.

Sure you did. Whether Doug Feith e-mailed you direct is not the point--I suspect you knew where it was coming from via crazy Laurie Mylroie or James Woolsey, it doesn't really matter.
Nice try to legalism your way out.
You lied your own country into war--and have not shown an ounce of contrite.
The US discovered yellow cake that was sent in the 1980s--and yet even here you continue to misrepresent. It was unrelated to the conspiracy perpetrated in the forged Niger Uranium documents--those criminals are still at large in DC, maybe you still bump into them?
But just to be clear, you are contradicting your "friend" Hillyer's characterization of your position on Saddam and 9/11, as you personally believe there was a connection?
C Bowen | 2.23.13 @ 9:25AM
In you 2004 National Review column titled: There is a C-O-N-N-E-C-T-I-O-N, you sited the illegally compiled and released Doug Feith memo, which was "laundered" through Steve Hayes, the same person who illegally, according to the Pentagon, published a column Case Closed, which was...the illegally released Feith Memo. Just a coincidence, okay.
Next question, in your mind, were the same people who were behind the forging of the Nigerian Uranium documents, the same people who forged the Habush letter that was leaked to you and Will Safire at the New York Times?
Or do you stand by the Habush letter as authentic?
Occam's Tool| 2.23.13 @ 4:16PM
Here's what you do, Bowen: put a Container ship in Galveston bay. Put low grade Uranium on it, still radioactive, but present. Blow it up near to shore near Texas City. Presto chango---you've just taken out the 2nd largest refinery in the USA.
Have you visited down there? Do you know the lay of the land? Do you know how vulnerable TC is? I spent four years down there, moron.
All you and Cheesehead Jack and Magenta Boy do is bloviate and ignore threats. You should look up the career of Burton K Wheeler, who did his country NO favors.
C Bowen | 2.23.13 @ 7:22PM
You are the one Occam, who wants to enslave the Islamic population and have them build a border wall under the lash?
Quinn and Deroy are friends of yours?
Still, why do you think Quinn misrepresent his friends view on Saddam and 9/11? Is Quinn ashamed?
Bandido| 2.22.13 @ 11:30AM
All piffle. It is a done deal. Republicans have caved on the filibuster, and Hagel, replicating his boss in ignorance of foreign affairs and anti-Americanism, is in. The downward spiral of the United States accelerates.
Oldefarte| 2.22.13 @ 11:45AM
American Jews need to get their collective heads out of their YOUKNOWWHATS when it comes to not only Hagel but the politician who wishes to make him the next Secretary of Defense!!!!!!
Jack in Wi| 2.22.13 @ 11:57AM
Every Jew in the Senate is voting for Hagel. He has retracted every mild and true criticism he ever spoke about the apartheid state. Lets just move along. Hagel is certainly as qualified as Rumpot, and Gates. Gates by the way, in his swan song, said it would be insanity to fight another war in the Middle East. Why do these guys only speak up when they are leaving office?
Crassus| 2.22.13 @ 2:53PM
Here comes the anti-Semitic cheesehead again. BTW, how is Hagel qualified? Because he served in Vietnam? So did my alcoholic uncle. Why not make HIM Secretary of Defense?
Jack in Wi| 2.22.13 @ 4:18PM
You are a moron Crassus. How is it anti-semitic to point out the truth? Hagel was a United States senator involved with defense issues. He spoke the truth about Israel a few years ago. He has groveled and retracted his statements. But who knows he might say them again good?
Occam's Tool| 2.23.13 @ 4:08PM
Jack and Bowen spoke the Cheesehead Fudgepacker version of the truth. Hard to see with Jihadi germ plasm in the eyes, Jack and Bowen. And how do you see ahead of you in the perpetual BOHICA position?
Deroy Murdock kicks ass every day and 3 times on Friday just to bug scumbags in Wisconsin. Quin is a superb human being who richly deserves the beautiful beaches of Mobile. Bowen and Jack are twisting, belching, flatulent homonculi who bow to rapists of young girls as they approach them on their knees.
That's my humble opinion. Should I visit the Mobile Area, Quin, steaks are on me at the Ruth's Chris. Should Mr. Murdock be there, I extend the invitation to him, as well. I do have family with a time share down there. You two gentlemen (Quin and Deroy) are people I would love to have my children meet.
Bandido| 2.22.13 @ 4:59PM
"Who knows he might say them again good?" What gibberish are you talking? If you can't write an intelligible sentence, you should go back to third grade and retake the course.
Red Phillips | 2.23.13 @ 12:35PM
If Murdock was really a "libertarian," then he would be a non-interventionist, not attacking Hagel for being insufficiently deferential to a foreign country.
If Hagel should be opposed it should be on the grounds that he is a globalist tool as Chairman of the Atlantic Council. As it is we have neoconservative globalist A attacking "realist" globalist B. We are in desperate need of a someone who will speak for America.
C Bowen | 2.23.13 @ 7:31PM
Murdock is also a big supporter of the PATRIOT Act--in Quin's world, this is a "libertarian?"
He clearly doesn't get out much.
Red Phillips | 2.23.13 @ 12:44PM
"We are in desperate need of a someone who will speak for America."
And someone who will speak for authentic (non-interventionist) conservatism, not the phony globalist neo"conservative" kind.
Marc Jeric| 2.23.13 @ 1:04PM
The gallery of far-left rogues manning the new Obama administration – Kerry, Brennan, Hagel, etc. will complete the “transformation” of America. They are intent on implementing the unfinished portion of Obama’s April Spring program of installing jihadist governments all over Northern Africa and the Middle East, thus leading to a lasting piece there after the annihilation of Israel and the 2nd Holocaust. “Negotiations” with Iran and North Korea will end up by these acquiring full complement of nuclear arms and necessary rocketry. The second Nobel Prize for Peace for our Marxist Muslim President will surely follow after these “accomplishments”.
Occam's Tool| 2.23.13 @ 4:08PM
Once again, may I compliment the superb Mr. Jeric.
C Bowen | 2.23.13 @ 7:37PM
McAmnesty and Grahmnesty (and for that matter the late Romney campaign) all supported the Clinton/Obama policy of working with radical Islam to topple governments in North Africa and the Middle East, and replace them with radical Islamic regimes.
Hagel is no prize, but at least he has the right enemies, right?
florin| 2.23.13 @ 3:02PM
Feb. 23rd: it doesn't matter - after Republicans bluster and sputter criticizing Hagel they end with: "but we're going to confirm him anyway." what bloody cowards! Hagel is simply not competent. He is being nominated for one reason only: Obama is his puppet master and Hagel will do whatever his master asks of him. Republicans should man up and deny the nomination.
Bandido| 2.24.13 @ 11:15AM
But they won't.
