Thousands of inauguration spectators were let down by a broken public address system and big screen television, sparking a mass walkout in the middle of President Obama’s address. 

I was in the back, on the Mall by the Washington Monument, and feedback and problems with the image on the screen—the sound out of sync with the picture—lasted the entire ceremony, making it impossible to follow the proceedings. I literally could not understand the speech.

There were no obvious signs anyone was trying to fix it.

“I guess we’ll just have to watch it later on TV,” said one visitor from Maryland.
