Jennifer Rubin does a
nice take-down here of the increasingly despicable Colin
Powell, who smeared his former party on Meet the Press by accusing
Republicans of a “dark vein of intolerance.” Thus says the first
black Chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff, the first black
Secretary of State, the sometime mentor of the first black woman to
serve as Secretary of State… all under Republican
sponsorship.
Thus says the back-stabbing lout who deliberately let the
innocent Scooter Libby twist in the wind, and then get convicted,
when one word from Powell would have ended the investigation. Thus
says the man who was afforded credit he didn’t deserve for conduct
of a Gulf War (1991) he more or less opposed, the man who denounced
his own testimony to the United Nations while blaming others for
its substance, the man who claimed to be a Republican moderate but
who endorsed the most radical leftist Democrat ever to serve in the
presidency over a Republican moderate (John McCain) who had
repeatedly befriended him and praised him throughout his
career.
Marco Rubio was right to push back against this man of little
character. Two Hispanic senators who are Republicans, none
Democrat? Check. Two Latino governors who are Republicans? Check. A
Republican as the only black senator? Yes. Two Indian (Asian)
governors? Republican. The only senator in recent memory
with real American Indian blood (at least partially)
in his veins? Republican. Legions of party activists first inspired
into politics by the inclusive, open, sunny Jack Kemp? Yes. The
party’s most recent vice presidential nominee? An actual former top
aide to Kemp.
Powell has become nothing other than a nasty apparatchik
currying favor with those in power. Maybe that’s all he ever
was.

Quin: How about Colin Powell for Secretary of the Department of Defense? If Hagel would be bad, would Powell be worse?
Anyway, good post.
fmm| 1.14.13 @ 10:46AM
Your best post in a long time. Powell vies with Obama himself for the title of most despicable.
SCPOret| 1.14.13 @ 11:12AM
Powell was always a lefty. He took great pains to cover it when he was Chairman of the JCS. I was in the military and recogonized him for what he was then and no feels he can let out in the open. He is and always was one who looked for an opportunity to advance himself. He proclaimed himself an R because he thought it would help him move into the political class and it did until people started to notice his actions and recognized he was a wolf in sheeps clothing. He was pushed out at state while obstensively retiring. He immediately started sucking up to the left hoping to get another shot in the political field. It hasn't worked because he has exposed himself as an opportunist of the first order. He doesn't have the gonadature to actually attempt a run for office so he stands on the sideline and throws rocks.
CforUS| 1.14.13 @ 11:12AM
Colin Powell was a political animal. He spent years and years living off the good graces of the Republican Party, getting preference in assignments and moving up the food chain quicker than most. Now he's no longer beholden to anyone in the GOP. He charges outrageous fees for speaking engagements so he is financially better off than most (dare I say one of the 1%?). He's now free to speak his true feelings. Much like recent public statements made by Chris Christie, I don't see a majority of national Republican voters getting pie-eyed over either one anymore. You've got to be all in, or all out. We don't need Weekend Conservatives.
Oldefarte| 1.14.13 @ 11:17AM
He is a dispicable and traitorous inhuman being. Reagan and the Bushs gave him his start/opportunity in national politics by promoting and facilitating him within the military system; and this is that way he shows his appreciation for their support/efforts? His support of Obama is nothing more than a minority politically supporting another minority, not because of a shared system of political beliefs between Powell and Obama, but instead because of a shared skin color. It happens 24-7 within politics sadly on many political levels [mostly local], but it's shameful when this individual turns his back upon those persons and their political party that gave to him his start!!!!!!!!!!!

Colin Powell was a politician-in-uniform, a curious creature who so loathes the American public that he NEVER ran for elective office, preferring instead to con the men he would invariably backstab on his way up the ladder.
Moreover, he ripped off Cap Weinberger's leadership principles and claimed them as his own. Cap was too much the gentleman to complain, but he really ought to have kicked Powell's @ss but good.
Derek Leaberry| 1.14.13 @ 11:35AM
Powell's lack of honor and honesty is best examined when his role in the Valerie Plame-Scooter Libby affair is considered. Plame's identity was revealed by Powell's flunky, Richard Armitage, yet Libby was persecuted by the long arm of the law. Powell could have stepped in at any time to spare Libby the years of legal agony he experienced but Powell wasn't quite the man to do the right thing.

Jan. 14th...How did Powell get away with this? It always surprised me...
Tom Kyba| 1.14.13 @ 11:53AM
The loons in Hollyweird had him pegged perfectly with the Paul Winfield character in "Mars Attacks". Of course, at the time the character was portrayed that way to poke fun at the Bush administration. Ironic, ain't it?
Seek| 1.14.13 @ 12:01PM
Hey, don't be ragging on my hero, Tim Burton. "Mars Attacks" (1996) was a funny camp piece, not his best, but always entertaining.
SCPOret| 1.14.13 @ 2:00PM
Every time I watch "Mars Attacks", I see Powell in that roll. Always waiting to see which way the wind is blowing before taking a position. I especially enjoyed it when he got zapped.
CforUS| 1.14.13 @ 3:55PM
Sound familiar at all? I guess in the movie he couldn't vote "present".
RAM| 1.14.13 @ 12:56PM
Exactly who now takes dirction from Colin Powell or even takes him seriously? The Democrats' minds are made up regardless, and the Republicans barely noticed his bolting their party. The political-media complex seems rather confused about his value.
Quartermaster| 1.14.13 @ 1:10PM
Powell is a useful idiot to the left. He has the right skin color and is willing to turn on those that made him what he became.
Powell isn't worth the time of day. Despicable scum who rose on the backs of his betters and used his skin color to his advantage is all he is.

There were 2 O5s serving with the ill famed Americal Division in 1970 that survived the purge that accompanied the Mai-Li Massacre. About every officer above Major saw some kind of retribution. But, Lt Col Colin Powell and Lt Col Schwartzkopf survived. Swartzkopf continued to get promoted the old fashion way -by serving in a number command positions before as would luck have it, would be nominated to command CENTCOM.
Lt Col Powell, on the other hand, received an OMB Fellowship, and served under a little known senior executive by the name of Caspar Weinberger. Over the next 15 years, Powell was groomed for high positions, before getting an unexpected appointment as National Security Advisor (replacing Robert McFarland) in 1987. Powell impressed the only people that counted - Senate Dems, who approved his appointment to the JCS.

This article reminds of of a quote written by one of the Reichwehr's finest officers of the inter-war period. General Kurt von Hammerstein-Equord wrote this about officers (it certainly applies to Powell):
"I divide my officers into four groups. There are clever, diligent, stupid, and lazy officers. Usually two characteristics are combined. Some are clever and diligent -- their place is the General Staff. The next lot are stupid and lazy -- they make up 90 percent of every army and are suited to routine duties. Anyone who is both clever and lazy is qualified for the highest leadership duties, because he possesses the intellectual clarity and the composure necessary for difficult decisions. One must beware of anyone who is stupid and diligent -- he must not be entrusted with any responsibility because he will always cause only mischief."

Slight disagreement with you, Quin--- wrong adjective.
Goes like this: The increasingly FECULENT Colon Bowel.

I think that means that he's full of excrement!!!!!!

Powell is still outraged over the way the Bush administration let him lie his tail off to the UN in 2003. The nonsensical garbage that he told the UN on Saddam's WMDs still haunt him and still embarrasses him to this day.
My favorite from the UN speech was the threat of the bioweapon laded drone that turned out to be a balsa wood mini-aircraft with a lawnmower engine. I dont think he ever forgave Bush/Cheney for that stunt.

Jan. 14th: Powell should be expelled from the Republican party...Repubs. play too nice...he is a 'lout' and worse. He uses his 'blackness' to smear others...I'm so sick of this ongoing manipulation of 'blackness'...remember Obama said we're not black or white but American? He is the most divisive President in memory as are his followers...let's stop exploiting 'blackness'...stop whining and stop using the Republican party as your whipping boy...you think, act, speak and whine like a democrat Powel so move on...and join their party....you are not worthy to be in the Republican party...you have betrayed your friends and comrades for a long time, you have betrayed the military men and women who don't whine like you do...you are pathetic!!!
J.C.Eaton| 1.15.13 @ 1:19AM
Powell is a sorry burlesque of a man, of a soldier, of a hero. He expects loyalty and shows none: he claims to demand truth and offers none: he screams for justice and brings none. He is simply, ineluctably: trash.
