Quin,
It is the middle class who is being killed by this tax and a $5 Million exemption on the Federal Estate Tax is paltry. You can be a middle class small businessman or farmer and leave an estate twice as big as that when you die. Indexing it to inflation is imprecise and could be foolish. What does one do if there is a deflation of the dollar?
The exemption should be at least $20 Million dollars and then the rate of taxation on the balance should start out low and increase with the size of the estate after that. People who die with great wealth have myriad ways to avoid these taxes anyway.

Well, $5 Mil. was an improvement...
In regard to "Tax increases for the rich", there are actually alot more rich Democrats than Republicans. 8 of 10 richest counties voted Obama. Professional athletes should be taxed @ 90%.

There are no victories whan taxes are raised. The death tax represents the direly needed transferring of agricultural etc estates from the dying to their living/surviving relatives and as such should not be taxed one penny. It is simply another form a governmental welfaric theft on the part of the corrupt domestic terrorists aka Democrats. Abolish the death tax entirely and tell their indigent constituents to GET A JOB [oh wait there are no jobs thanks to these terrorists right?]!!!!!!
