Britain has summoned Israeli Ambassador Daniel Taub to London to dress him down over plans to expand settlements in East Jerusalem and the West Bank. The Brits called Israel’s plans “deplorable”.

I wish Britain had shown this kind of indignation and outrage when Hamas was launching rockets into Israel last month. Surely firing rockets is more deplorable than building houses.

"Surely firing rockets is more deplorable than building houses."

In our current world you are clearly mistaken.

In 1948, the British tried their best to prevent the founding of the State of Israel, and to turn their mandate assets over to the Arabs.

Cool. Then the Israeli Ambassador can discuss the fact that the Brits can't protect the Jews properly within their borders given the increasing violence towards Jews in Britain caused by guys named Mo, thus necessitating additional housing in Israel.

The Brits are going down the drain. Dhimmi scum.

The Brits conduct has been steadily downhill from the Balfour Declaration. They caved to pressure from the Mufti and abandoned the Jews whose care was entrusted to them by the League of Nations. They then opening supported the Arab League in its attack on the new Jewish state. English upper class anti-semitism has a long and ugly history and remains ever bubbling beneath the polite outward demeanor.

The Brits did the same thing in the North of Ireland when they planted Scottish and British Protestants there centuries back. So the British don't really have moral authority on the issue, however I think it is wrong for the Israelis to expand settlements in East Jerusalem and the West Bank. Just like in the case of Northern Ireland the practice of planting will just sow the seeds of conflict for more generations to come.

I must disagree, Dmitry. The Settlements put time pressure on the Palestinians to deal with their recto-cranial inversion problem.

Unless you completely fill the Settlements with Ultra-Orthodox Jews that don't believe in using birth control the settlements will never be able to match the Palestinian birthrate.

I generally think it's a mistake to build new settlements in the West Bank, especially in outlying areas. But that is Israel's call, not mine. I fully understand the latest decision, however. If the PLO is going to go the unilateral route in establishing a new Palestinian Arab state, as their UN move suggests, then Israel has every right and responsibility to take its own unilateral actions to protect its existing population, especially in and around Jerusalem.

The Palestinians are about as serious in their negotiations with the Israelis as I am in stating that Marijuana should be legalized (read my earlier comments on this). But Settlements force reality based thinking.

Stkman| 12.4.12 @ 4:43PM

Now that they are a recognized state, the first time they commit violence towards Isreal, Isreal should obliterate Hamas and send the Palestinians to Egypt and Jordan.
