Paul Ryan’s congressional campaign has released Ryan’s last ad
before the election, entitled “The Idea of America.” Although
it’s nominally for/from his race for Congress, the message is
clearly meant to appeal — and should in fact appeal — to a wide
range of voters in the presidential race, looking to swing Ryan’s
home state of Wisconsin into the Republican column for Ryan/Romney
next Tuesday. (Note how the ad mentions America three times but
doesn’t mention Wisconsin specifically.) It’s a tough
challenge, but far from impossible, and I certainly hope they
succeed in that effort. (At
Intrade.com, betting odds on Republicans winning Wisconsin are
sitting around 26 percent.)
The debacle of this president’s administration is both a cause
and a symptom of the decline of American values. Unless Congress
impeaches him, that decline will go on unchecked. An eminent jurist
surveys the damage and assesses the chances for the recovery of our
culture.
The American Christmas, like the songs that celebrate it,
makes room for everybody under the rainbow. Is that why so
many people seem to be hostile to it?
