Sandoval Slams 3 HR in Game 1 of World Series

Much to the delight of Bay Area fans, San Francisco Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval joined a select few by hitting three homeruns in Game 1 of the 2012 World Series en route to an 8-3 victory to take a 1-0 lead in the Fall Classic. Two of his three homeruns came off Detroit Tigers’ ace Justin Verlander.

Sandoval, or Kung Fu Panda as he is affectionately known, joins Babe Ruth, Reggie Jackson and Albert Pujols as the only MLB players to hit 3 HR in a World Series game. The Bambino, of course, did it twice. Mr. October hit three homeruns on three pitches. Pujols joined the club last year while still a member of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Prior to tonight, Kung Fu Panda had never hit three homeruns in a game

Sandoval added a single in his fourth at bat and knocked in four of the Giants’ eight runs tonight. Giants starter Barry Zito gave up only one run in five and two thirds innings pitched and helped his cause with a RBI single. Tim Lincecum pitched two and a third innings of scoreless relief striking out five.

Game 2 of the World Series will take place tomorrow night.
