Is the proper term for a group of Alabama residents "Alabamans" or "Alabamians", as the headline on the linked articles notes?

Great question. I have spent 14 years trying to use "Alabamans," because that makes far more linguistic sense. But the Press-Register always uses "Alabamians," for what seems to me like no good reason. Oh, well.....
