The Detroit Tigers beat the New York Yankees 8-1 earlier this
evening to sweep the ALCS advancing to the World Series for the
first time since 2006.
Tigers DH (and
recovering anti-Semite) Delmon Young, who is becoming something
of a Yankee killer, won the ALCS MVP. Young went 6 for 17 with 2
homeruns and 6 RBI in the four game sweep.
The Tigers may be as a disadvantage as five days will elapse
before the take the field either in St. Louis or San Francisco. In
2006, the Tigers were off for a week between winning the ALCS and
Game 1 of the World Series. The Tigers lost that Series to the
Cardinals in five games.
But the Tigers are fine with that problem.
The Yankees have a long winter ahead of them. While they were
able to win without Mariano Rivera, they became listless once Derek
Jeter broke his ankle in Game 1. Complicating matters was Joe
Girardi’s benching of Alex Rodriguez which had begun in the ALDS
against the Orioles. A-Rod went a combined 3 for 25 without a RBI
in the ALDS and ALCS. But A-Rod was hardly the only Yankee who
struggled at the plate. Robinson Cano, Curtis Granderson and Nick
Swisher were equally lacklustre at the dish. But with $114 million
remaining on his contract, A-Rod got most of the ink. Now there’s
speculation
the Yankees may unload A-Rod to the Marlins.
And what about Girardi’s future?
Well, this is the happiest Red Sox Nation has been all
year.

On the other hand, Raul Ibanez had a decent post season, and I believe he might be an free agent next year (unless the Yankees have a club option).

The suffering of Yankees players and fans: is anything on planet Earth more beautiful, satisfying, upright, or heartwarming?
