It happened after the Bush tax cuts too…

It will be interesting to see if anyone in the lamestream media calls out Biden on his very important misstatement of historical fact.

I expected a long column from you today crowing about the intellectual titan of the conservative movement coolly eviscerating clueless Joe Biden last night. But I guess you watched the debate.

Ross Kaminsky| 10.12.12 @ 11:05AM

I was not in the lineup for today, but frankly that debate was just painful to watch.

Ryan had the better on domestic issues, but I thought Biden did pretty well on foreign, including on the issue of troops in Afghanistan.

But for me the biggest takeaway was what a jerk Joe Biden was. His grins and grunts and interruptions were annoying and pathetic.

Frankly, I turned off the debate just over halfway through when it became clear to me that there would be no clear winner -- which is also what post-debate polls seem to show.

Actually, things turned out just about right. There was a huge risk of alienating folks if Ryan had beat up too hard on "Uncle Joe." I think Ryan threaded the needle quite well, well enough to appear competent, but not be a young, disrespectful bully.

CJW| 10.12.12 @ 12:06PM

You are right, Mike, Ryan was smart to stick to facts, not rasie his voice, and not look like he was mean to the crazy old uncle. Biden is truly crazy.

I listened to the debate on radio while I puttered around in the garage. I thought there was a lot of static from some lightning off in the distance. But I didn't realize it was Biden snorting and carrying on until I watched highlights on line this morning.

Biden is a despicable crude jerk. He's a serial liar even on his own record. I am really surprised he still didn't say the truck driver was drunk even after being called out on that lie. And the maderator. Come on. At least pretend to be fair.

spike59| 10.12.12 @ 11:30AM

and we all expected the 'usual Prog/Lib suspects' to (as usual) ignore the point of the column ENTIRELY...and you did not disappoint...btw, Biden eviscerated himself with his juvenile mugging, verbal capering, and snide comments...what America saw was, is supect, the REAL reason Biden was put on the ticket in 2008: no matter WHAT the POTUS does, no one would dare impeach him and risk a Biden presidency

What's the matter, DRed? No comment on Ross's link?

Dred knows it;s all over for his cult, but he can't man up to it. period.

How should be gauge prosperity? Clinton had higher real GDP growth during his presidency (in which he raised taxes) than Reagan enjoyed. Real GDP grew 3.3% during Carter's presidency. That's better than during Reagan's first term. If you average Reagan's terms, real GDP grew 3.4% during his presidency. During Carter's presidency, real GDP grew over 5% until the oil shock of 1979, which certainly wasn't caused by Carter's tax policy. The data is far from conclusive that lowering taxes is the only way to achieve prosperity. (and don't get me started on the 'growth' caused by the Bush tax cuts)

DRed| 10.12.12 @ 3:55PM

You could look at job growth numbers too, if you'd like. They also don't support the idea that only tax cuts lead to job growth.

Stan Redmond| 10.12.12 @ 1:00PM

If Joe would have shut his mouth and stopped his antics he would have been eviscerated. But he did accomplish his mission. Tactically it made sense because the Obama Biden presidency has been a disaster and all Biden can do now is become such a distraction no one will focus on Benghazi, Fast and Furious, Obamacare, Unemployment, Solyndra..... However I think it has backfired. ANyone but the OBama base saw a pathetic, rude, and unhinged jerk.

Butch| 10.12.12 @ 1:37PM

Thanks for the link; I'll use it. I think it also worked in certain foreign countries. Chile comes to mind, and there are others. Maybe India, Poland, and Ireland (for a while, given favorable political control). Maybe Ross can give us some more information on that. I believe exactly the opposite of what Biden said is true: I think it has worked every time it was tried. I am working from memory of an interview with Arthur Laffer a couple of years ago.
