The Spectacle Blog

As you may know, the Detroit Tigers clinched the AL Central last night for the second consecutive season.

However, for most of the 2012 season, the Chicago White Sox were atop the division.

Now the White Sox weren’t expected to be part of the mix and had just hired Robin Ventura as their manager. Although Ventura had a distinguished playing career, he had no managerial experience.

But Ventura provided a nice contrast to the volatility of Ozzie Guillen. It helped the likes of Adam Dunn, Alex Rios, A.J. Pierzynski and Jake Peavy have resurgent seasons. The mid-season acquisition of Kevin Youkilis from the Red Sox added a further spark. Chris Sale and Addison Reed emerged as one of the best young starters and closers in all of MLB, respectively.

Well, that seems like a team for which to root. So why am I happy that the heavily favored Tigers prevailed?

Two words: President Obama.

Obama is a Chisox fan and we would have had to see him during the post-season and if the White Sox won the World Series we would have never the heard the end of it from him.

Of course, if the Tigers win it all then Obama will compare them to GM. But believe me we should all be grateful that the White Sox aren’t in the post-season. But if Obama loses then I would be perfectly happy to see the White Sox in the playoffs in 2013.

With all due apologies to Ross, hopefully the current POTUS will be watching each game of his "favorite" baseball team in the bleachers while unemployed at "Kaminsky" Park next year, on his own dime.

Ich Weis| 10.2.12 @ 11:06PM

Look, it's Comiskey park, not "Kaminsky" park though our "Prez" doesn't seem to know that either. Hell - it's now referred often as "the Cell" since U.S. Cellular seems to own it - on our dime, I'm sure. But c'mon, Ross, who wants to be a fan of the Cubs!? They're the irresponsible yuppie left-leaning Lincoln Park Trixie crowd. Cry havoc and don't spill your Starbucks. Seriously - go to Wrigley. All the chicks have Starbucks. It's friggin' baseball, man! Not "The View!"
They'll never forgive Steve Bartman and, it seems, never make it to the World Series. I could never ever be a fan of the north-side white-man's 0ver-bite dancing crowd. They're a bunch of WXRT (our lefty Progressive music station - read: REM) listening dingbats. You're more likely to hear "Red Solo Cup" coming out of a Ford F250 super crew off the diamond in the lots near 35th, not some hipster crap.
Besides, Obama's a phony. He's just a Sox fan like he's a Christian - it serves his purpose, but we know it means nothing to him besides his daily affirmation in the mirror.

For some reason I've always hated the Detroit Tigers although their inept teams from the 90's always gave me plenty of laughs. Their '96 aggregation gets my vote for worst team in baseball history. Every game it seemed they would invent new ways to lose. Oh, and don't forget Ernie Harwell, the worst broadcaster in baseball history.

Paul McGrath| 10.3.12 @ 12:17PM

Your first sentence contains a non sequitur. Your second sentence, using the word "aggregation" to describe a baseball team, is woefully off the mark. Your third sentence is one that could easily be used by a lifelong FAN of the Detroit Tigers. Finally, your fourth sentence is laughably inaccurate, as Ernie Harwell, a local broadcaster, was acknowledged nationally as one of the best that ever was.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but based on the way you presented it, the only conclusion that your audience is likely to reach is that your wit is roughly equal to that of the Bronx Zoo orangutan.

Crassus| 10.3.12 @ 3:14PM

Simply the fact that you think that hack Ernie Harwell was a great broadcaster invalidates every thing in your post. It shows that your taste is equal to that same Bronx Zoo orangutan.

Aaron,
I'm really glad that the Tigers won instead of the Sox. No one knows yet, but it's a referendum on the presidential election. Sox win, they are Obama's team. Tigers win, Mitt's from Michigan, so they are Mitt's team. Let's hope that this also follows in the presidential race. GO TIGERS!

lil' berry hussein was once asked who his favorite white sox player was and he couldn't name anybody...NOT ONE ! i'll bet lil' berry hussein thinks frank thomas is just another community organizer !

junkyard infidel| 10.3.12 @ 11:38AM

...and, GO TIGERS !

Occam's Tool| 10.3.12 @ 12:11PM

Cubs fan. Screw ChiSox.

Personally, though, I left Chicago to go to college because my parents sucked. TCU had MUCH better looking women than Chicago. Still does.

Cpm| 10.3.12 @ 12:12PM

Although this has been a very enjoyable season for the Sox, I'm willing to accept your premise if it will finally separate my Sox from their "biggest fan". Now, Mr. Goldstein, we need a column on the Cubs' record season of futility.

JimH| 10.3.12 @ 1:51PM

I guess I'll have to give up the Mets. Besides their pathetic play of the last for years, Mr. F and F, Holder has declared himself a fan and Bill Maher has bought a share of the team.
