As someone who has both children and guns, this horribly sad story reminds me of the importance of good parenting, both in terms of raising a child who won’t do stupid, criminal things, but also who understands the potential risks of such behavior, including from horrendous misapprehensions of any given situation.

Rarely has a news story struck a chord with me as this one has…it’s the sort of thing I would not have really understood until becoming a parent myself.

I can not imagine what the father is going through and will go through everyday of the rest of his life.

The thin details of the story make it even harder.

My prayers are with the father and family in this very dark hour.

As a parent, I understand the tragedy of this situation. Since they were big enough to understand, I have tried to impart unto my children the importance of avoiding stupid behavior (practical jokes, “punking” people, etc.) that can lead to violent responses being directed against them.

While I recognize that there are many questions yet to be answered, I must ask why a 15 year old was at his neighbor’s property at 1 a.m. with a mask on leading her to conclude that someone was breaking in, and can imagine scenarios where if the facts as related in this story are accurate, as tragic as the outcome was, another tragedy or series of tragedies may have been averted.

How terrible. How simply terrible.

Recommendation: Toxicology screen the corpse, specifically looking for synthetic cannabinoids or "bathsalts."

As the father of 3 and a gun owner I am deeply saddened by this tragedy.
As the father of 3 and a gun owner, I could easily have shot a person with a skimask and what appeared to be a weapon charging at me in the dark at 1am.
Heinlein was right; stupidity is a capital offense.
This incident brings new meaning to the term punked.
God's mercy on all involved.
