Great column
today by Gary Palmer of the Alabama Policy Institute. Do click

A taste:
It has long been understood that nations go into decline when
the moral character of their citizens go into decline. Not only do
large segments of the population neglect their civic
responsibilities, but far too many of those who do participate do
so primarily out of personal self-interest. And this is not just
true for liberals who want to expand entitlement programs to
“…spread the wealth around.” It is also true for conservatives who
turn a blind eye to government corporate welfare and other programs
that benefit them.
Our system of government as a constitutional republic cannot
continue indefinitely if half of all Americans who vote are at odds
with the other half over fundamental truths and principles
regarding the role and scope of government.
…
When we have almost 40 million people on food stamps; almost 50
percent of all wage earners paying no income tax; almost 40 percent
of all children born out-of-wedlock; social classes pitted one
against another; and race and gender used for the advancement of a
political agenda, society has become unbalanced to the point of
tearing the nation apart.
Clearly, these are not the values of a great nation and it is a
problem that will not self-correct. It will take leaders with
conviction and courage to challenge the American people to a great
awakening of the virtues that allowed America to become a great
nation……
Gary is right. This election is about far more than economics.
Maybe one day the Romney campaign will figure that out.

Guess what, Quin, we haven't been a "constitutional republic" for almost a hundred years now. We haven't had a "society" since the Great Society handed it over to the State for "improvement".
And here's the one that will really irritate you and your readers: we haven't had any real opposition to all this since Buckley and the National Review created what is now called "conservatism" with its explicit acceptance of the permanent Garrison State and perpetual war with its endless interference in the affairs of other nations abroad and steady deterioration of liberty and constitutional order at home in a futile quest for "security".
Now we just argue over who can better "manage" this slide down into totalitarianism.

"perpetual war with its endless interference in the affairs of other nations abroad"? Does that encompass 9/11/01 perhaps??????? GD you silvered-spooned little AH's ought to be one-way ticketed to Siberia or Bangazi which would benefit our society greatly!!!!!!!!

With Paul Ryan coming out for homosexuals serving in the military, it is really hard to comprehend much of a difference between the two parties. What next? Republicans surrendering on marriage?

A POTUS's job is not to be THE POPE IN THE WHITE HOUSE, aka JFK [ or Santorium] with his Camelotisms, WAR ON ABORTION etc. We have had far too many bafoons in the oval office who donned sweaters and turned off lights to save governmental money, who deciminated the carpeting [and WH swimming pool] with their semen, etc. Yeah, there are HO HO HOS in Hollywood that encourage sixteen year-olds to become BABY-MOMMAS, to snot Drano up their smelling apparatuses, etc, but that is not anything a POTUS can fix! At the other end of the societal equation, people need to remove their craniums from their anul cavities and begin to improve themselves individually [and society in general along with it]. We need to stop glorification of the Cruises, the Baldwins, the Marrs, the Whoopies, the Bahars, the Obamas, the Franks, the Johns, the Weiners etc in life if we're ever to begin to recalibrate our children and grandchildren and to do what this writer wishes. How can that be done you ask? Simple.....turn off the GD TVs, quit going to movie theatres, start going to parent-teacher and school board meetings, monitor and parent your children's activities, etc; thats how!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS: Oh and also ......VOTE THE ENTIRE REPUBLICAN TICKET ON 11/6/12!!!!!
Oldefarte| 9.28.12 @ 1:11PM
PSII: Some DOUCHE here recently ridiculed by living IN THE PAST. Well, duh yeah! In the past, there were no movie theatre massacres of patrons with AK-47's, no Fort Hood massacres, no OWS's; etc. Most everybody in my day went to church, respected their fellow humans [except for a few insane morons with sheets that covered up their empty cranial cavities], worked for their financial livings etc!!!!!!!!!
Oldefarte| 9.28.12 @ 1:34PM
PSIII: Although not directly related to this editorial's subject, Newsmax's lead story concerns the polling results indicating possibility the elderly of Florida and the midwest as being opposed to Romney/Ryan's ideas concerning Medicare. IF this is true, then these old coots [and I'm borderlined within this grouping, although with mental faculties intact] will possibly cause the complete downfall of this country if they are brainwashed by the propaganda-enabling arm of the Democratic Party [MSM] into believing that Obama/Democrats represent a better solution to their concerns than does R/R. Are they so stupid, and does the senior class represent spittal droolers within nursing homes without the capacity to THINK FOR THEMSELVES? This country will be toast if O/B are re-elected, and most of us here hopefully understand that, but Florida's etc seniors have got to be made to know the TRUTH of who/what the Democrats are to their concerns, that Medicare will be destroyed and replaced by WELFARECARE [why would the government fund two/2 seperate distinct medical programs?], that D's have already stolen $700 billion from the former to pay for the latter, and that the Ds plan will authoritarianly relagate seniors to DEAD MAN WALKING status if they are instrumental in re-electing him. Someone please has to quickly find a mechanism to tell these seniors the truth concerning this before November!!!!!!!!!!!!

An honest article that is hardly news to those acquainted with the fears of the Founding Fathers. They knew why the Greek and Roman efforts at Democracy crashed and burned, and feared we would do the same.
And, now, we see it happening. Everyone needs some skin in the game, so nobody is mostly a taker. These people, made ignorant by a failed educational system and lies, think the cell phones they have are free and from Obama. Somebody paid, and they are parasitising those that paid.
And no one can change their minds.
SYAsked| 9.28.12 @ 10:36PM
As beautiful as nation building and cultivation of Democracy seems, I do not favor it. Better to be the shining city on the hill, to which millions still want to come, as they leave their miserable native lands.
Amazingly, they still do.
When I see wars being fought, I think of Bill Ayres, Mentor and buddy to Obama, never sorry he set his bombs, getting off, although his wife served her time. Read his book from way back when. 'You Don't Have To Be A Weatherman, To Know Which Way The Wind Is Blowing'. A child of Capitalist prosperity who hates Capitalism, and wants us to waste our resources on brush-fire wars all over the globe.
