Steve Sabol, one half of the father-son duo which
founded NFL Films, passed
away today after an 18 month battle with brain cancer. He was
two weeks shy of his 70th birthday.
Sabol and his father Ed changed the way Americans watch football
with their use of slow motion, montages and wiring players and
coaches for sound. They gave football a third dimension which could
be understood by the casual fan.
I leave you with “The Autumn Wind”,
a poem composed Sabol which is the unofficial theme song of the
Oakland Raiders.

One could argue that Steve Sabol and his father are as responsible as anyone for the incredible popularity of professional football today. God, did I thrill to those films as a boy: the stirring music; the superb narration; and, of course, the spectacular camera work. (Was Steve Sabol also the narrator? Man, that guy--whoever it was--was great.) All of it done in an unironic, straightforward, peculiarly reverent way.
These guys were a couple of geniuses. Football owes them big-time.

John Facenda was the announcer.

If there was any justice in the world, Facenda would have been interred beneath the "frozen tundra of Lambeau Field"

I love NFL films. Makes every game MONUMENTAL. Awesome. RIP.
