You don't need a 3D printer. If guns become sufficiently hard to get, websites will tell you how to make them just as they tell you how to make bombs.
Bans on assembled products don't prevent criminals from getting them. They can make it more difficult, but that's all. The purpose of a ban is to impose moral hazard and justify criminal punishment for misuse of what is banned, not to prevent the thing from existing.

While a fictional portrayal, the Clint Eastwood film "Line of Fire" featured a character played by John Malkovich who fashioned a pistol out of wood and other materials. Someone with time on their hands with access to materials will almost always be able to manufacture a lethal device out of what is available.

3D printers may replace Made in China. Motley Fool has an article on them recently. I certainly hope so.
