I did not hear about this until someone mentioned it to me after my swim. There was a shooting at a rally following the Parti Quebecois’ election victory last night. As Premier-elect Pauline Marois spoke, shots broke out resulting in one death and one person being injured.

The suspect was detained and has been identified as a fishing lodge owner from Mount-Tremblant. He was alleged to have to spoken about an awakening of Quebec’s Anglophones. But details are sketchy.

Under the circumstances, it could have been much worse. Still, it is a shame that it happened at all.

And the world thought nationalism was dead. Nationalism, sectarianism...tribalism they are back with a vengeance. As usual Pat Buchanan is right on the money with his earlier predictions.

Historian John Lukacs has been writing about that for 50 years. It is the overriding theme of his nearly 50 books. Nationalism is the strongest movement in the world. Read his recent historical essay: "Democracy and Populism--Fear and Hatred!" 2005, Yale University Press.

And what happened here! Canada has one of the strictest gun control laws in the world!

Quebec "Nationalism" is becoming a very old story, regardless of which party runs the province. Quebekers want to be their own nation-as long as Canada is still there to "wipe their collective backsides"-and unfortunately, that's exactly what Canada will always do...
