The Spectacle Blog

My friend Quin Hillyer has an excellent post on Mike Huckabee and Akin below. Among other things, Quin says: “This is no time for niceties. This is a time for hardball. No matter what Akin meant to say, what he said is so ignorant and offensive as to be disqualifying. A moral leader, as Huckabee aspires to be, would see that, and use his considerable weight accordingly.”

But while Huckabee dithers, Quin has come up with another idea on getting Todd Akin out of the Senate race. He touched on it in a post yesterday.

So let’s get it out there on the table:

While Mitt Romney is now the titular leader of the GOP as its soon-to-be nominee, within GOP circles there are three people with a very unique standing: Former Vice President Dick Cheney, Former First Lady Nancy Reagan, and Michael Reagan. In yesterday’s post Quin also mentioned the two former Presidents Bush and Bob and Elizabeth Dole.

Romney has stepped up to the plate on Todd Akin. While several of these people might put out forceful public statements, there’s one person on this list who could pick up the phone and have the kind of private chat that use to scare the hell out of liberals and al Qaeda.

Quin actually used a phrase that involved words like “chew” and “a….”.

I’d write out that second word, however this is a family publication. But you can say all kinds of things in a private chat. And Dick Cheney knows how to do just that. He has quite effectively chewed many posteriors in his time. And Akin’s just begs to be chewed.

Also… kudos to Senator John Cornyn for threatening to withold Akin’s funding from the NRSC. Good for him. No more mother’s milk.

The clock ticks.

Hold STRONG Mr. Akin's, the Glory of Heaven awaits you. Don't listen to those Rino's...

JD| 8.21.12 @ 12:52PM

Liberals are truly despicable people, aren't they? Nothing scares them more than having to compete honestly!

Tom Kyba| 8.22.12 @ 1:31PM

Your constant attempts at satire aren't making you look very quick on your feet Lassie.

Davod| 8.21.12 @ 12:26PM

I read somewhere that Akin has been talking like this for twelve years. How was this missed by conservatives?

Quin Hillyer| 8.21.12 @ 12:32PM

It really wasn't missed. There was a reason that conservatives like Santorum and Palin endorsed various ones of Akin's primary opponents....

Mender| 8.21.12 @ 12:40PM

It's my understanding that Santorum also is opposed to abortion in cases of rape on religious grounds. He's just not so nuts as to claim that it never happens and any woman who claims to have got pregnant through rape is probably lying.

What with this it's a good thing he didn't win the nomination: imagine the Obama campaign ads.

Mender| 8.21.12 @ 12:35PM

Opposing abortion in the case of rape is not a unique position. It's at least a point of view, and maybe not a deal-breaker in a very conservative state. He's never made a secret of his views.

Expressing support for it with phony information shows that he's an idiot and would make a terrible Senator. If he is this ill-informed about a political debate he claims he knows how to contribute to, what makes you think he will bring sense and insight to anything else he does?

fmm| 8.21.12 @ 12:47PM

"Expressing support for it with phony information shows that he's an idiot and would make a terrible Senator."

Perfect description of the problem!

mjs_pa| 8.21.12 @ 12:51PM

Wouldn't that apply to the 538 members of Congress and the President too? They all provide phony information regarding taxing, spending, debt and deficits. Implying, somehow there are easy, painless solutions.

John Navratil| 8.21.12 @ 1:27PM

I'd feel a lot better about Cornyn's move were it not for his support for Specter and Crist.

Republicans never stick together. The effects of Akin's statements could have been moderated had someone come to his defense. Let's recap: Akin doesn't believe in abortion even in cases of rape and incest. Many pro-lifers agree, believing that abortion is murder even under such horrible circumstances. Pro-lifers who make the exception for rape and incest could have said that while they disagree, Akin was voicing his conscience. Akin then said that only a small percentage of unwanted pregnancies are the result of rape, which his true. He then made the wacky statements about the body shutting down and "legitimate" rape which are admittedly absurd but could have been dampened had someone spoken up for him the way the Dems always come to the defense of Joe Biden and serial predator Bill Clinton. When every Republican treats the guy like he has leprosy is it any wonder the Dems continue to trumpet the story?

Jake| 8.21.12 @ 1:40PM

It seems pretty obvious that Akin lives in his own kooky world , which is why he was such an easy pawn for McCaskill and the Democrats.
They didn't promote Brunner and Steelman for a reason.
Jesus Christ himself could ask Akin to get out for the good of the party and the pro life movement and I don't think he would listen.
Huckabee and Tony Perkins have shamefully allied themselves with a guy who may ensure that liberal Justices will control the USSC for decades.
They can kiss any pro life court decisions good bye...forever.
This is another case where some in the pro life movement do not see the bigger picture.
The majority of Republicans , conservatives and many in the pro life movement have circled the wagons to protect this election.
Huckabee and Perkins are the outliers and they are not only damaging themselves , they , with Akin ,
are hurting the cause.
It's clear that it's impossible to reason with Akin .
In addition, he fails to recognize that he has no national support ,
no Missouri support ( Survey USA ), no funding
and no hope of winning.
Which brings up the possibility of his diminished mental capacity.

Crassus| 8.21.12 @ 2:38PM

Akin doesn't even have a hot looking wife. Mrs. Akin is as ugly as wet sin. From what I've read she completely dominates him and is the one who urged him to stay in the race.

aware| 8.21.12 @ 1:48PM

Distractions will continue until collapse happens.

Martin| 8.21.12 @ 3:55PM

At 5,01 this afternoon it becomes the duty of the revolting Cornyn to supply Akin with the funds he needs and for all other Republicans and Conservatives to repudiate their attacks on him. His views were known, he was duly elected in an open primary, and he has the right not to let one misstatement of his views wreck his career.

The sooner the allegedly conservative commentariat stop playing the left's PC games, the better. Maybe this will be a lesson to them.

Akin will be a GREAT Senator. Totally un-subornable by the left!

Mender| 8.21.12 @ 5:03PM

You clearly either believe the White House is a lock or that losing it is worth a slightly larger chance at a Senate seat.

Every day he gets GOP funding is a day the media treats him like he's Paul Ryan's best friend, mentor and spiritual confessor. A day nobody's talking about the economy. A day interviewers are asking everyone in the GOP from Mitt Romney to Jenna Jameson whether they agree or not and waiting for the first person to say something stupid. Witness liberal blog Gawker twisting Missouri GOP Committeewoman 's words so she seems to be claiming getting pregnant through rape is 'a blessing from God.' Steve King saying he's never heard of anyone underage getting pregnant through rape (Hint: Google 'earliest documented pregnancies wikipedia'.)

If that's what you want from now till election day, you're probably Nancy Pelosi.

Martin| 8.21.12 @ 5:16PM

No, if the left focus entirely on Akin, they will become self-defeating, as voters will become focused on the left's own extreme and unpopular social policies. He should probably have a "minder" from the NRSC, but he should have their full support.

darcy| 8.21.12 @ 6:43PM

I agree with you, Martin.

The "legitimate" rape comment is easily understood to mean that it is well known that some women claim rape when none occurred. He was being overly technical, and in this hyper-scary environment with the prospect of certain doomsday -- in the minds of many, including my own -- should we suffer a 2nd Obama term, the proverbial s**t hit the fan. Which was convenient for the pro-choice crowd, in all its various political stripes.

The body shutting that thing down part is also easy to understand when one PAUSES long enough to be rational. It's a medical fact that emotional and physical trauma can cause miscarriages. The ongoing emotional trauma of reliving what for most women is a harrowing experience can certainly cause a miscarriage. Any objective person would admit both of these things to be true.

The wagons should have been circled around Akin; it's a disgrace that it wasn't; it's a disgrace that a man cannot make statements such as he did without being skewered alive and abandoned for road kill.

Kingofthenet| 8.21.12 @ 4:33PM

Do Not let the GOP Abort Akin..!

The GOP must be required to carry him to Full Term, Restore his Feeding ( Campaign Spending ), and Live with the consequences of their own Actions - Just like the GOP want to impose on Women.!!

Why should Republicans be allowed to do what they want to prevent American women from doing?

Tom Kyba| 8.22.12 @ 1:35PM

Help me help me! I'm kingofmyownego and I have no new material so I just post the same Dick and Jane level comments hoping to annoy grown-ups.

Martin| 8.21.12 @ 7:18PM

OK, time now to rally round Akin. Certainly not to encourage a write-in candidacy, which will only guarantee McCaskill's victory. Akin is an excellent conservative, albeit verbally careless and to my right on social issues. He won the primary; it's time for other Republicans to repudiate their hysterical denunciations and rally him to victory. If Romney doesn't want to appear with him, no problem; separate campaigns have happened many times before.

2blumutts| 8.21.12 @ 11:28PM

So, you took the hook! Had the knee-jerk reaction. Try looking up the background for Akin's remark in the JWR. Akins realizes, now, it was not only a poorly worded response , but he should have schooled those around him that more important issues need to be discussed. Stand up and have the marbles to fight for the bigger cause, here. You blinkers are an embarrassment. Besides JWReview, Dana Loesch, from Breitbart also has it right..... Akin, stay in!
