Virginia vs Massachusetts

Needing a few minutes thinking about something other than Paul Ryan, I’d like to share with you a note I received from a friend. Cast of characters: Valentina is my friend’s young daughter. Louis is my friend’s old friend from college.

Valentina stayed with Louis’ family while we were in Boston. They have a 10 year old, Jenna (who was born just a few days later than Valentina — they’re just the same age). The following exchange between Valentina and Jenna was related to me by Joan (a friend who was driving them) and it highlights the cultural divide that stands between Virginia and Massachusetts children (Joan could not keep a straight face retelling the story).

The car drove past a flock of wild turkeys.

Valentina: “Woah! I’ve never seen anything like that. They’re just hanging around.”
Jenna: “Yeah, they’re everywhere.”
V: “Not back home. We’d just shoot them and eat them.”
J: “You are allowed to do that in Virginia????”
V: “Of course! They’re delicious and they’re food. You can’t shoot them here?”
J: “People don’t. I think it must be forbidden.”
V: “Wow, that’s strange.”
J: “No, it’s not strange. And it’s definitely forbidden. It’s in the Bill of Rights.”

Oy. As my wife (born on a cattle farm) says: "you don't get attached to barnyard fowl. They're food."

I'll hold off comment because that sounds like your typical silly conversation between 10-year old's.

My concern is of the more immediate: similar conversations between "adults", you know, those whom our esteemed first lady recently referred to as "confused knuckleheads".

Conversations between children reveal the thinking of the so-called adults with whom they associate.

SHIRLEY you jest? "esteemed first lady" ? Is that the same first un-lady that visited the Colorado hospital to thank the medical staff which treated the shooting victims and WAS WEARING A GD TEE-SHIRT to same????????????????????

Bob Grant| 8.12.12 @ 11:21PM

I'm serious...and don't call me Shirley!!

ahhh....but was it a designer tee???? was she wearing her $8gazillion sneakers???? that's how you know she really really cares

Our esteemed first lady is merely confused about who the confused knuckleheads are. Her husband desperately needs their votes.

Oldefarte| 8.12.12 @ 1:28PM

"confused"? Is that the same one that has been taking $million dollar vacation-trips to Paris, Aspen and Hawaii, all on the taxpayers' dime??????????????????? Confused my ars!!!!!!!

Massachusetts has been full of turkeys for quite a while: a whole flock of Kennedys, and Kerry, and Barney Frank, and this new contender -- can't remember her name -- who claims 3% Amerindian ancestry to get the affirmative-action benefits.

the salient point, i think, is the 'and it's definitely forbidden' mind-set of the typical Massachusetts liberal who believes that Government doles out our rights as it sees fit. this mindset runs rampant thru most of the northeast
