As John Tabin has noted, multiple reports indicate that Mitt Romney will pick Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan to be his running mate.

I must confess that I spent the afternoon putting together an article titled, “Why Romney Won’t Pick Ryan”.

Never have I been happier to be wrong.

By picking Ryan, Romney has both elevated and embraced one of the leadings lights of 21st century American conservatism. More than any other Republican, Ryan has articulated a spirited defense of the free market, fiscal responsibility, what limited government should like and how we pay for it.

By picking Ryan, Romney has shown he’s not content to play it safe and willing to take a risk to win the election to restore America’s greatness.

By picking Ryan, Romney has put Wisconsin in play.

By picking Ryan, Romney has chosen a running mate that has gone toe to toe with President Obama and got the better of him as was the case during the 2010 Health Care Summit in Washington, D.C. When Obama publicly insulted Ryan to his face during a 2011 speech at George Washington University, Ryan called an impromptu press conference and said, “Rather than building bridges, he’s poisoning wells.” Ryan strikes fear in the heart of Obama.

By picking Ryan, Romney may force Obama to drop Joe Biden in favor of Hillary Clinton or some other more formidable opponent because Ryan would wipe the floor with Biden in a debate.

By picking Ryan, Romney has kept the future of American conservatism alive for years to come and may have also picked a future President.

Of course, the press could be wrong and that by itself would be enjoyable to see egg on their faces again. I wonder why Romney would name his selection on Saturday when people are still focused on the Olympics. Nonetheless, I don't doubt that the campaign picked what they think is the best time.

Ryan is a solid choice, better than I expected. He is an eloquent speaker and knows the budget better than anyone. He is a nominee who can cut through the media distortion machine and get his point across; something that few GOP candidates have been able to do in recent years. In addition to his other attributes, I think he will have good appeal to youthful voters. The only problem is we won't have him in Congress to push the new budget through.

Well, wouldn't have helped much with the Senate absolutely refusing to go to work on the budget.

I think Wi. will be in play. I like Ryan who is the congressman in my neighboring district. I just think his budget will give the Democrats a mountain of ammunition. We will see how Paul handles the presssure. Ryan is the best guy of those people mentioned for VP. I don't know if anyone can save this ticket. Romney just threw a hail Mary pass.

Considering the results of the recall election, how can Wisconsin NOT be in play?

Ryan would run circles around Biden in any debate. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see Obama with a different running mate when the Democratic National Convention rolls around.

Ryan's 'Plan' is like 3 guys starving on a desert island, first guy says, OK I got a plan, if we each sacrifice one leg, we can eat well for a couple weeks. The other two look at him like his gone insane and than he adds, least I got a plan.

Joe "Bite Me" Biden should just not show up at Centre College in Danville, KY, on Thursday October 11, 2012.

Ryan will destroy "Bite Me" during the Vice Presidential Debate.
