The Spectacle Blog
I have deliberately read no commentary today. I’m just letting it sink in.
This is the very first time I have been highly enthused about a Republican ticket since 1984. I did LOVE the Kemp choice in 1996 when it was made, but it always had the air of desperation in a losing cause.
This one doesn’t.
This choice rocks.
Absolutely fantastic.
Paul Ryan is the future of the conservative movement. And, finally, the future may be now.

Yes, you're absolutely correct, but you misheard the "next". Ryan will be POTUS from 2020 [after President Romney retires from office] until 2028. This means a Republican will occupy the WH from 2012 [officially in 2013] until 2028, 16 years. Isn't that great! Thanks for bringing same to our attention!!!!!

Good thing those of us not paid to follow such things do, Quin---we'll be here to serve up the crow should Romney win.
1. Ryan has a record of supporting labor unions.
2. Ryan has a record of opposing real budget reform---he voted to increase the debt ceiling, for the omnibus spending bill, and against the bill to return spending to 2008 levels and strip Obama's "emergency" spending from the baseline budget.
3. Ryan offered only lukewarm support to Scott Walker---see #1.
4. Ryan stabbed Rick Santorum in the back with his Romney endorsement after Santorum supported his plan and Mitt Romney ran squealing from entitlement reform in the primaries.
5. Romney governed as a liberal.
6. The RNC speaking slots are almost exclusively RINO---where are the primetime slots for his conservative primary foes?
And so on. And so on.

But I tell you this, Romney will be custodian for the Welfare/Warfare State in the best Republican tradition. He will not make the cuts that are critical if a brick wall at 200 MPH isn't our very near future. It may make a lot of partisans feel better to have Romney instead of Obama, but the euphoria will be soon forgotten when reality shows up with a nail embedded club and proceeds to beat the hell out of all of us.

A little overstated Mr. Hillyer. Also this is a waste of Ryan as the VP has no clout. Ryan would have been better situated as Speaker of the House or as a cabinet officer. The one thing this pick does for the ticket is to focus the election even more strongly on the economy, as entitlements are one of the two root causes of our economic problems. Hope they can make the case.

Those skeptical of Ryan as VP pick should listen to it. Perhaps, this was a good choice...jury is till out for me and I am willing to hear other viewpoints.
