The Spectacle Blog

Mitt Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul hit back against a controversial ad by a pro-Obama super PAC, but her defense has created a controversy of its own. The ad blames Romney for the death of a steelworker’s wife. Saul responds that she would have been covered by Romneycare:

To that point, you know, if people had been in Massachusetts under Governor Romney’s health care plan, they would have had health care. There are a lot of people losing their jobs and their health care in President Obama’s economy.

Saul said this on Fox News. A lot of people are saying she went off message, but I’m not so sure. There are those who think Romney would benefit politically from embracing his Massachusetts health care record, even if it blurs the distinction with Barack Obama on the issue. This may be the beginning of the campaign testing that theory.

Oy. Bad move. Correct move would have been to destroy the facts around the ad, as Romney was not at Bain and was not responsible for this and the cancer developed 2 years after lay off---for cryin' out loud, don't DEFEND Romneycare!

RCV| 8.8.12 @ 10:51PM

You can't ignore the elephant in the room, Occam. Romney is the father of Obamacare. That's just a fact.

Jack in Wi| 8.8.12 @ 3:18PM

Romney is just not doing a good job of defining himself. It is hard when your whole political career is against what the base of the party belives. If he doesn't get his campaign straightened out by Labor day he'll never get it done. Even a dunce like McCain knew enough to put Sarah Palin on the ticket to get the base inspired. What has Romney done to get the base vote out? The people mentioned for VP are just putrid.

My kid who voted once in the Scott Walker recall because I dragged him to the polls has just gotten another letter from Mitt Romney. If that is how he is going to get the youth vote he won't succeed. I just got another letter from Jeb Bush pushing Tommy Thompson for Senate next week. That solidifies my vote for Mark Neuman. This war between the Tea Party and the party hacks is getting intresting. The more the old hacks lose the better the future of the party.

Indy| 8.8.12 @ 3:30PM

Romney and team cannot hit a big fat sofball pitch hanging over the plate, good grief. He could not defend free speech when Chick-fil-A was attacked by the Left, there are so many examples of how he is blowing it, dude take the "mittens" off and learn to fight like a girl.

Sjccoach| 8.8.12 @ 3:42PM

Statements like this one are why Romney will lose to Obama. Romney is not a conservative. He is Obama lite and he is not willing to trade punches with Obama. Because of this we will have four more years of an Obama presidency.

Al Adab| 8.8.12 @ 5:26PM

As many kept saying throughout the primaries, Romney is no Conservative. Is anyone surprised given his Fathers' record with the Conservative Movement? Romney is simply another and the latest in a long line of republicans going back to Tom Dewey who accept the social-welfare State as legitimate and only propose to manage it better, not to roll it back and increase Liberty.

nancyk.| 8.22.12 @ 4:28PM

Regardless Pres. Obama would win anyway. Repubs. have to garner more than base." Like 08" they may lose Western Plains States, former Red" States, because they can't get Independants, & they are losing some Repub. women voters. Again, this is what happens when you let T.V. talking Heads, exVice Presidents run the show. MCCain never chose Palin, others did." There is no liberal anymore most of those issues are mainstream now. Mr.Obama is middle." Yet hasd been right on " in the recovery after crash08". Romney is not cerebral either, you must have some good handles on many areas. He is very light weight." He is shifty when speaking, & I am concerned about the small crowds, mostly elderly, and overweight white middle age Repubs. It will be 08" again. Too Late. They never accepted Romney in the MCCain Camp, > Shadey Biz, taxes, foreign accts."

Care to share?

Mike in N.C.| 8.8.12 @ 5:03PM

You mean Romney is going to embrace the work of the Heritage Foundation and his own work? Gold medal for a double flip-flop!!!

Ken (Old Texican)| 8.8.12 @ 5:06PM

If 51 percent of the voters in this country vote for Obama...AGAIN...we probably deserve a national "go galt sit down" by the makers in this country.
OOPS!

Mike in N.C.| 8.8.12 @ 5:51PM

Yep, everybody should just sit down like Galt and watch the country and their own wealth slip into oblivion. Any chance you are an agent for Iran?

nancyk.| 8.22.12 @ 4:35PM

It will be a higher % than that. Wayy too early to listen to polls. The last 2 wks. are best indicator. Romney has enough probs., with his own party. Pres. Obama has BEEN Pres. Romney is only running for.." He is not Presidential, lies way too much, one liners are not Presidential material. Debates will be bad for Romney. He stitters, stutters when pressed for truth. Taxes are Big. He must address. Iran is Big. Most folks want no War in Iran, want an end to this dismill waste of humanity in Afghan. But the DOD, & Pentagon are a Gov't within a Gov't. America is War Weary."

Occam's Tool| 8.8.12 @ 6:54PM

Folks, I don't think the Bummer is going to win. I had the gut feeling that McCain was going to lose in 2008 (thus, I was playing AC/DC's "Highway To Hell" on a continuous loop as I was driving to the polling booth). I felt much better in 2010, and enjoyed watching Oberstar get gutstomped in the election as that arrogant Lefty Hack deserved. This year, Mitt is gonna win, and since he WANTS to be re-elected and has NO PERMANENT PRINCIPLES, he will be guided by reality. Reality will guide his economic policies (cut and lower taxes) and his foreign policies (let Bibi kick Iranian ass, and intervene only when it makes sense).

Quartermaster| 8.8.12 @ 9:08PM

Occam, I seriously doubt Mittens will win. Elections depend on low info voters and that is what will be fought over after Labor day. Low Info voters tend to go overwhelmingly for the left. Betting that Mittens will win is not a very good bet. I hope I'm wrong, but that's a matter of choosing between hope and experience.

nancyk.| 8.22.12 @ 4:43PM

Agree. Wishful thinking. Over Simplification. Nevwer, ever, Occam, make statements about kicking"-- in War . Disrespectful to all who perished in Iraq, Afghan., War is not a movie. Iran poses no threat. Israel can stop using us, & the real ignored region is Central America. Romney, Occam,is wayyy behind in likability, Women from his party, Military.Independants never vote Repub. since the 80's. No, Romney will stitter, stutter his way to a bad loss like MCCain. Another Cand,. would have been better, but you had Voter Fraud by Repubs. in Iowa, N.H. took votes from Paul & Santorum."

Mike in N.C.| 8.8.12 @ 9:24PM

I feel your pain, sorta. Romney. You hate the guy. You did everything you could to defeat him in the primaries. You don't trust him. Nobody trusts him. He has no core. Name one issue he has flipped on. The only glue that is holding the whole right wing enterprise together is hate.

Pathetic.

nancyk.| 8.22.12 @ 4:45PM

Yup.and Lowered Expectations."

Crassus| 8.8.12 @ 11:43PM

John McCain, Orrin Hatch, Charlie Crist, and now Mittenz. These are the losers who have seen fit to employ this worthless twit who calls herself Andrea Saul. Sometimes you get what you asked for.

nancyk.| 8.22.12 @ 4:46PM

Shes the front person, the puppeteers are still Rove, Cheney."

aware| 8.9.12 @ 5:44AM

Maybe the pig just needs a little more lipstick.

Carmela| 8.9.12 @ 8:27AM

They are bringing knives, we counter with a fly swatter. If this continues Romney will lose. Where is the Romney that tore up Newt? What's he afraid of? Get some attack dogs out there already.

Crassus| 8.9.12 @ 10:40AM

Mittenz thinks it's okay to attack fellow Republicans but like McAmnesty in 2008 he won't attack the Bummer for fear of being branded a racist. It's just that simple.

nancyk.| 8.22.12 @ 4:49PM

What??? Nobody needed to tear up Newt, he did it himself." Romney has neither the intellect, courage, guts, cdalm, or confidence that our President has. This Romney could never, ever have come out whole with the hate, lies that have put on this President. He is not worthy of the Presidency. All the good ones won't run for the party they are embarrassed.

Carmela| 8.9.12 @ 8:33AM

BTW it's not too late to win this news cycle. The outrageous cancer ad is being roundly denounced by left and right now. Romney can still use it to gain advantage, if he has the guts.

nancyk.| 8.22.12 @ 5:17PM

Sometimes the peoplewho renounce things are the same ones who helped spur it on." Truth is people HAVE died from illnesses, caps on coverage, no coverage, lost their jobs in 08" Not one congress person, Senator should have free healthcare at our expense untill everyone who needs to be covered is. We don't exist for them, they are paid by us, to do the people's business. Now this skinny dipping boys thing in Israel. paid by private donations? Yet not one, would help to get thjis recovery going faster. All credit does go to 1 Repub. all Dems & the President.

Conservative Bob| 8.9.12 @ 11:44AM

If you can't seem to force yourself to get excited about Romney I suggest you consider getting motivated to preserve your children's and grandchildren's Liberty, it is hanging in the balance. If Obama is re-elected Liberty dies, it is that simple.

Romney may be someone who will only manage the Beast more efficiently. If that turns out to be true we at least preserve the chance to send in more true conservatives in 2 years to reinforce those we sent in 10 and this cycle.

We have the tools and candidates we are going to have in this election, wishing it were different will not change that fact. Bitching and moaning is a distraction and a drain.

We all know what Obama is going to do if given another term.

That is our choice, more time to preserve individual liberty or acceptance of the tyranny that is team Obama and permanent status as subjects.

nancyk.| 8.22.12 @ 5:20PM

Liberty" Old Argument. Get real. Worry less about the guns for your kids, worry more about healthcare, education. Our Liberty was put in Peril, all those sent under false pretense to Iraq. Liberty???? Ask the families abiout that!

nancyk.| 8.22.12 @ 4:21PM

55,000 that's it?? As a 25yr. Repub., awards, Presidential Taskforce, Volunteer, I am concerned about the lack of directness by Mr.Romney. When you fail to be upfront, it spins out of control. We don't need another Bush. Also, Hypocritical to leave Sarah Palin out of Convention. It causes moretalk" as she was a Vice Presidential Candidate. When we needed her.. she was there. You the organizers' are not fooling anybody, the Media will have a field day, it will distract.
