The list is a pretty sorry lot. Jindal hasn't been much except relative to the crooks that preceded him in office.
J Baustian| 7.25.12 @ 1:15PM
Jindal has been a great governor. But his state still needs him more than we need him to be vice-president.
Same with Chris Christie -- he needs to stay in NJ.
Occam's Tool| 7.25.12 @ 12:42PM
I would put Pawlenty above Jindal. Low key, team player.
RCV| 7.25.12 @ 12:43PM
Don't understand the logic. What does Jindal bring to the ticket? Why wouldn't Portman be a much smarter strategic choice?
Quin Hillyer| 7.25.12 @ 1:16PM
Portman's double drawbacks: Tight connections to BOTH Bush administrations, and reinforcement of Romney ticket as second-generation rich dude.
Derek Leaberry| 7.25.12 @ 2:54PM
Absolutely correct. And I would add that Portman doesn't help much with the undecided vote in Ohio, most of whom do not support Portman's absolutist views on free trade. Ohio is filled with former industrial workers whose jobs have been shipped overseas. They're culturally conservative yet not quite Friedmanite in economics.
RCV| 7.25.12 @ 4:22PM
Thanks to you both for the insights on Portman's weknesses, neither of which I was aware of.
Derek Leaberry| 7.25.12 @ 4:56PM
I assume Jindal cooks Cajun and Curry. He brings that to the table.
R Martin| 7.25.12 @ 1:25PM
Is your psychic antenna the same one used to prognosticate golf tournaments? What we'd really like to know is whether or not you have some other basis for the Jindal handicapping.
Quin Hillyer| 7.25.12 @ 1:46PM
Well, I hope it is the re-appearance of the antenna that for about 30 years made me really good at predicting golf tournaments, before I lost my touch about four years ago!
Derek Leaberry| 7.25.12 @ 2:57PM
Of the big three states that Romney must win, Florida looks most likely in the bag. Portman helps little in Ohio. However, Romney has been very soft in the polls in Virginia, increasingly home to a large suburban population dependent on government largesse. Governor McDonnell, whom I don't like, should be the pick. Without winning Virginia, Romney most likely loses in November.
