The Spectacle Blog

Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohamed Morsi has been declared Egypt’s new President.

The Islamist takeover of Egypt is now complete.

While the Muslim Brotherhood has been part of Egypt’s political life for more than 80 years, it wasn’t until the mid-1990s when its power began to ascend in earnest. Contrary to the claims of James Clapper, the Muslim Brotherhood is not “a largely secular organization” as can be seen in these photos of the graduating class of the University of Cairo. Check out how differently the women are dressed by 2004 as compared to previous years going back to 1959.

I believe the Muslim Brotherhood will continue to run multi-party elections in the interim. But don’t think for a minute that such a practice will  carry on if its power is seriously threatened in any way, shape or form. The chief aim and objective of the Muslim Brotherhood is to revolve life around the Koran through Sharia law. Any challenge to that aim and objective is not going to be tolerated. Which means life gets a whole lot worse for Muslims who believe in secularism and pluralism and, of course, for non-Muslims - particularly for Coptic Christians.

This also means the Camp David Accords are dead. Maybe not today or tomorrow but it’s only a matter of time. In which case, Israel and Egypt will once again be at war. It isn’t inconceivable that Egypt and Iran could form a Sunni-Shiite alliance in the name of destroying Israel once and for all.

As with all dictators, Hosni Mubarak wielded power arbitarily and capriciously. Yet at the same time, the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood would come under his watch albeit a very gradual one. Nonetheless, I have a very strong feeling that in the not too distant future Egyptians who demonstrated in Tahrir Square will long for the days of Mubarak.

The more we interfere in these countries the more the people turn to the radicals. 60 years ago most of these countries had secular regimes and were moving toward the West. We imposed Israel in their region and bought most of the dictators in these places and now the chickens are coming home to roost. The more we interfere the worse it gets. With extreme regimes like Saudi Arabia and Israel as our allies in the area, we can expect extreme opposition from the growing group of radicals. We should just leave and let them figure it out for themselves. There are huge energy resources in this country and in other Western Hemisphere countries. It is time to use and develop them and let the Middle East be the responsibility of the people who need the oil, Europe, China, India, Japan and Korea. Our whole Middle East policy goes from one disaster to another.

The whole middle east will turn into one entire Iran, thanks to the present administration, and the Muslim terrorism emanating from same will be disasterous for this nation and for Israel. Their oil supplies are the only thing of value to our national interests, but if Romney gets elected with a Republican congress available, I suspect our domestic supply [both offshore and on] will become fully developed for both the energy needs and their related well-paying jobs from same. This will negate the importance of the middle eastern oil [and Russia's] oil supplies to this nation rightfully, and will equate to a defeating/deflating result to the threats coming from same [since the oil revenues that they now filter towards terrorism will substantially decrease in value tow their economies]. The Muslim Brotherhood takeover is [or should have been seen as coming forth well before the 11/4/08 election as a result of same, and this administration's picking-and -choosing foreign policy there tells a pointed picture [or should]!!!!

A society makes a decision on the way they want to go, I would think all the religious people on American Spec. would be THRILLED seeing all those moral and modest and God fearing fellow theists.

It looks like it is President O's White House that is thrilled. Jerusalem will be their capital, Allah willing.

Apparently all that stuff about a Palestinian people that we have been told just boils down to a religious movement that President O has helped put in power. There never was a two state solution except in the mind of fools in the West. Brandish your weapons as the new Egyptian President says. The Muslim peace is coming.

I would not say the Islamist takeover is complete. It's just started. The question is what the Military will tolerate and if they lower the boom what the rest of the world will say.

Jerusalem will not be a Muslim capital in the future, however. At the moment we are witnessing the run up to Ezekial Chapters 38 and 39.
