While the Internet is all aflutter about whether a Daily Caller reporter interrputed the president’s Rose Garden remarks on immigration today, it is probably more fruitful to discuss the long-term effects of the revised policy. One thing worth considering is what impact, if any, this will have on Mitt Romney. Let’s look at the early indications.

First, Romney has strongly identified himself with Marco Rubio — who was proposing his own DREAM alternative — on the immigration issue. “I’d like to see legislation that deals with this issue, and I happen to agree with Marco Rubio as he looked at this issue,” Romney has been quoted as saying. “He said that this is an important matter, that we have to find a long-term solution, but that the president’s action makes reaching a long-term solution more difficult.”

Second, Romney has taken the Rubio line that a “long-term solution” is preferable to Obama’s temporary fix: “I believe the status of young people who come here through no fault of their own is an important matter to be considered and should be solved on a long-term basis, so they know what their future would be in this country.” In fact, Romney criticized Obama for issuing an executive order, which can be rescinded by subsequent presidents — and according to several reporters, he did not answer questions about whether he intended to reverse this order himself.

During the primary campaign, Romney supported the attrition through enforcement strategy of dealing with illegal immigration, talking about self-deportation. He was advised by the man who helped write Arizona’s SB 1070 law and has been supported by noted restrictionists like Bay Buchanan. Romney’s opposition to the DREAM Act was a turning point in his race against Rick Perry, who supported a state version of the law. This could represent movement and fluidity in Rommey’s immigration stance, which bears watching.

My guess that Romney will do something entirely inconsistent with a position he held previously, and then he will lie about it.

aware| 6.15.12 @ 5:16PM

You think Romney is going to come out against amnesty? Really?

C Bowen | 6.15.12 @ 5:28PM

He is going to come out for having Congress rubber stamp Amnesty and thank Marco Rubio for his leadership--millions of bytes, and vats of ink will be spent on this important procedural point.

CJW| 6.16.12 @ 2:59PM

It is more important how Congress reacts. There should be a congressional investigation of Obama's usurpation of its powers.

aware| 6.16.12 @ 4:04PM

You mean the same congress Rubio is in? He thinks it was a good idea.

C Bowen | 6.15.12 @ 5:27PM

Romney and Rubio will work together to insure Amnesty--Stupid Party in action.

Have people become permanently, politically, and socially retarded? What the fraud is doing is not legal and is not in keeping with the Constitution. He himself claimed that he did not have the power to do this a year ago.

How about Romney pointing out this for a start and pointing out that he is not a dictator. The reason behind this action is so obviously political and self serving, it is ridiculous.
The same fraud is suing Florida and Arizona for UPHOLDING the law in this area regarding illegals voting and being here. His attorney general just says f%$%ck you for a year to congress and does whatever he damns wants to do.

As usual the REAL frigin issue here is not what Antle is fretting about but this runaway, dictatorial government that does whatever it damn wants and to hell with the law, the constitution, the We, the People, Congress, or representative government.
No accountability, no redress, no representation, no responsibility.
These damn liberals, particularly the useful idiots can not see the danger here, nor do conservatives seem to fully grasp it and pay more than five seconds of attention towards the matter.

Bob K| 6.18.12 @ 1:08AM

Amen to that, Brother!

And it wouldn't hurt poor, fretting, Mr. Antle if he got out his copy of Orwell's "Politics and the English Language;" reviewed it and practiced some of it's principles. Then we wouldn't have to be reading this crap about "long term solutions" and "movement and fluidity in Romney's immigration stance."

It's not my fault that you Mitt are richer than I...so hand over your money!!!
What a pathetic twit !

Jake| 6.15.12 @ 9:28PM

Mott Romney is not POTUS.
Barack Obama is.
Mitt Romney did not declare himself Supreme Dictator and he did not make all illegals age 30 and under free people.
Barack Obama did.
Romney is not the problem , Obama is.

RCV| 6.15.12 @ 10:47PM

Romney opposed the Dream Act only to get through the GOP primaries. Now the etch-a-sketch is being reset for the Romney-Rubio romancing of the Latino vote. The tepid response from both of them today speaks volumes.

JimH| 6.16.12 @ 7:51AM

Romney should be emphasizing how it is being done more than what. Some mechanism needs to be in place to legalize those who were raised here and those who served in the our military. A plan to do this combined with strong border controls would be a acceptable to most.

Skippy| 6.16.12 @ 3:20PM

I'm with you and Robt. Heinlein on that one.
"Service ensures citizenship."
Any illegal invader willing to put his life on the line for America deserves no less.

aware| 6.16.12 @ 4:03PM

Just like Rome in the final days, we have to depend on invaders for troops with a promise of "citizenship". It didn't turn out well for them and it won't for us either.

You are so used to seeing signs of decline you even urge it on.

Teflon93 | 6.16.12 @ 8:47AM

He will embrace amnesty---only slightly more slowly than the Democrats want it.

aware| 6.16.12 @ 4:31PM

Never a disagreement on direction, just velocity. Once you clear the cliff the speed of approach will pale to insignificance.

R. Dittmar| 6.16.12 @ 11:26AM

I'll just note that "long-term solution" is Romney-speak for something that won't p*$$ anyone off until after he's safely elected.

Skippy| 6.16.12 @ 3:20PM

Who are you clowns gonna vote for.
Nobody?
"Thanks!"
BHO

aware| 6.16.12 @ 3:56PM

So it's not the fault of the Republicons(yeah, CONS) for giving us the nag. Nor the fault of the "supporters" of the nag. Its not even the nag's fault.

It's the fault of those who think he is a nag. A big government statist nag. Thanks for clearing it up.

Well Skippy, if you think Romney is so great then you carry him across. I sure won't.

Teflon93 | 6.16.12 @ 4:21PM

Maybe we'll right your name in, Skippy.

Oh wait---same as nothing.

Occam's Tool| 6.16.12 @ 8:11PM

I disagree with Romney on this issue. I wasn't fond of Reagan's position on Health Education Assistance Loans when my tuition was raised 1000 percent in Medical School either.

But, folks, Obama is a nightmare from Hades, surrounded by friends who want the United States destroyed. Romney is an imperfect human being who is too far to the Left for most of us.
