The Spectacle Blog

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush has been appropriately critical of President Barack Obama and has talked up Sen. Marco Rubio as a possible national candidate. But he seems to think Mitt Romney is too conservative.

On immigration:

The focus has been on that in these debates, and Governor Romney has used this as a means to connect with a group of voters that were quite angry, and it was effective. But now he’s in this, somewhat of a box. So I think the broader message is how you get out of it.

On the liberal canard that today’s Republican Party would be too conservative for Ronald Reagan:

Ronald Reagan would have, based on his record of finding accommodation, finding some degree of common ground, similar to my dad, they would have a hard time if you define the Republican Party — and I don’t — as having an orthodoxy that doesn’t allow for disagreement. We’re in a political system in general that is in a very different place right now.

On his father’s tax increases:

[T]he budget deal my dad did, with bipartisan support — at least for a while — that created the spending restraint of the ‘90s…. helpful in creating a climate of more sustainted economic growth.

Far from helping Romney, the younger Bush brother may be out for what our Tom Bethell calls “strange new respect” for himself.

For people as old as I am, the Bush family has been the enemy since 1979 when George HW Bush was the standard-bearer of the GOP elite against Ronald Reagan. How conservatives allowed themselves to be suckered by that collection of arrogant plutocrats is beyond comprehension. Don't be surprised that the Bush contempt for conservatives is addressed more vigorously at family gatherings in Kenneybunkport, Houston, Dallas or Miami. The hate Jeb has for conservatives sears right through in his comments.

It all started when Reagan picked HW Bush as his VP.

The Bushes are the rightful heirs to the Rockefeller wing of the GOP. They don't recognize how vicious the Left and the Democrats are today and they are really uncomfortable with these Tea Party types. I mean they would never let people like that into the country club.

His saying Romney is too Conservative is useful to the Romney campaign, however.

HW Bush was a worthless dickhead. Terrible on the economy.

No more Bushes in office!

This bag of would-be Brahmins are little more than ass-clown side-shows. That includes the termagant "matriarch" who was bilious, venomous, contemptuous of Ms. Palin. Going so far as to recommend that she return to Alaska. The WHOLE lot of them need to be reminded where the sally-port is and to find alternative activity. Anyone who believes this last mediocrity is somehow fit for the Presidency in or out of the Conservative coda is simply nuts. Best,

But, the budget deal his father signed off on (with great pressure from the late Richard Darman) had no spending cuts (only promises of future cuts). His father was a victim of one of he olderst and most common Dem tricks - tax increases now, and promises of spending cuts later. His father got rolled and paid for it.

Jeb, for some reason, is acting like the future of the GOP resides with the relics of the past. The Bush Wing of the GOP amassed some $ trillion of defecits over just 8 years. And the Bush Wing of the GOP begat Obama.
